I finally found out the problem, but how do I clean this part w/o messing things up?

The tranny in my 89 hatch is AUTO. The overdrive gear was always slipping into 4th and the engine light would come on...
For the longest I thought it was my transmission just wearing out. Wrong
Me.. being a dumb **** never realized to look at the ECU and see what code it was throwing. It gave me code 12 which is EGR Valve malfunction.
I don't have a vacuum to properly test how the book says to test it. But the end result is either .. A. Replace it... or B. Clean it
I took the EGR valve off and cleaned it up with some throttle body / carb cleaner. Drove it around and after awhile it gave me the same code and the tranny did the same thing.
Well I have some questions.... How the hell does an EGR valve have an effect on how the transmission shifts.
And now.... How should I go about cleaning out the intake. I alread know to take the thing off, but are there any do's or do nots I should worry about while I am cleaning it.
i am hoping to clean out the intake real good and try to find any blockage... because replacing that ****** EGR valve is 200$ before tax

the EGR valve allows some of the exhaust gas to be recycled thru the engine...it also causes a loss of vacuum on the intake; this may cause erratic shifting in the transmission if the EGR valve is stuck open.
$200... for the part! wtf? ouch!
did the tranny lockup code show ? (code 19)
