I have access to regular (87octane) gas thru my job - is it ok to run?
Many people will argue that it wont make a difference...truthfully though, regardless of what the shade tree mechanics say...Honda requests you use premium fuels in the S2000 (as does BMW on my 325...and ive had the same argument with people about that too)...and if the manufacturer is going to request that, and you're going to spend the money to own a sports or luxury car...might as well just put the good stuff in your tank. Truthfully, you're saving a few bucks, but isnt really that big of a deal? I dont feel a bit of regret spending a little more for premium...im not gonna miss that $5-$10 honestly.
Do you know what the C/R of the motor is? Do you know what the Octane rating is and what it stands for? I say, sure. You should do it and let us know how many times you can red line it. It will work, just dont know how long it will work. Read your hand book that came with the car. Do a search to learn what octane does and why you need to USE it
sorry, I failed to mention that my 2k is used with NO MANUAL.....so I can't look it up. Does it say WARNING! ONLY USE PREMIUM FUEL OR YOUR MOTOR WILL BLOW! or does it say 93 octane is recommended but 87 octane is ok but will result in lower power.
thanks again for the help!

Either ways, listen to the sign or pay. It just ends up being money out of your pocket. Ping it a couple times, bend some valves, score the FRM bores. Those couple bucks you saved at the pump isn't going to add up to ****.

if you don't understand the basic priciples of octane ratings. i don't know what else to tell you.
if he's getting that **** for free. let him use it. we're trying to tell him to just use 91 and up, it's all on him. not our cars. end of discussion

omg...from that response alone im going to guess that you'll be gone soon anyways. Listen up bud...you dont have to listen to a word we say...but remember who it was that asked the question...seems to me like you have your mind made up honestly, so why did you even ask? So you could argue with people that advised against it...or so you could make little silly smart *** comments? Run the **** gas in your car if you want...be a cheap skate and gas up on the company.
I love people that buy S2000's and feel that they need to cheap out...go buy a civic bud, give the S2000 to someone that doesnt mind spending a little more to keep up a premium car with premium equipment (in this case...gas).
As far as your little comment about the speed limit...yes, there are speed limits on the road, the signs are there to remind you that on that specific road, the speed limit set by the DOT after grading inspection, traffic flow patterns, and multiple weather condition observations...is there to keep you informed that "X" speed limit is the maximum speed they approve for that specific area or road safely...and by law, you are to reduce speed 10-15mph depending on condition severity during inclement weather situations...so yes, they are there for a reason, just like the little sign that says use premium fuels.
Can you choose to ignore it? Surely...in ANY case you can, but when you do that, you take it upon yourself to face the music when the consequences for such present themselves to you...in the speeding situation, you face a ticket or possible accident...in the gas question, you face future repair costs and reduced performance.
Quit jewing your sports car...

i dont know if the ECU retards timings in s2k's, but they retard rimings in TL's and i believe sti's. i am sure they retard timings in a lot of other cars as well. i suggest you get a civic to run on that 87 octane. even the h series engines require premium and their compression is 10:1 or 10.2:1. somewhere around there.
I dont see why people always bitch about prices when in reality it is not a big deal when analyzed.
These gas prices are basic figures around my area, and 1 gallon might cost you 5 dollars, but the price difference between grades is usually pretty similar throughout the country.
Regular 87= approx 3.00
Mid Grade 89= aprox 3.10
Premium 91= approx 3.20
Think about it, it only cost about $1 more PER 5 gallons, or $2 dollars PER 10 gallons!! So overall, you will only be spending about $2.00 to $2.50 more a fill up in gas, on 91 PREMIUM. Are you that cheap to not spend an extra TWO DOLLARS??? Does your car not matter that much??? For TWO dollars?????????
Sell the car to me, and I will take care of it with premium, and you can have my Teg, and use 87 ALL DAY long Because I say so. Sorry if you dont get the idea, but come on, dont be a cheap *** and **** up a good car.

to answer your question, plain and simple
87 octane will probably be fine if you do not go Wide open throttle on the car.
the second that you do with very low octane like that, chances are it will ping.

I couldn't access the S2K owner's manual online (it's in Japanese), but Honda does address this issue and documents that 87 octane is permissible. In high compression motors which usually require 91+, the engine "should" automatically retard timing to accomodate the lower octane. As such, you would notice a slight performance drop and possible reduction in gas milage.
I was at least able to verify the octane literature in the owner's manual for the 99-00 EM1 before I posted this. Someone available to pull out their S2K owner's guide to make sure that's the same for theirs?
And to the original poster, is it worth saving $2.20 at pump to substitute what will most likely be an equal loss in mpgs?
I think Honda only intended to have that feature in case Premium's temporarily unavailable at the pump. Hope that helps to clarify.

I read the manual in my RSX-S (that also had 11:1 CR) and it said that you can run 87 octane, but the factory hp#s are based on 91 octane. I don't think that ratio is high enough to warrant the extra as "a nessecity," but as hypnosis said, its worth it to have the piece of mind with 91 for just a few xtra bucks.
There was a time when my gas light was on in the RSX and the only gas station within 30 miles was out of 91 and 89. So, I ran a little bit of 87 for a while and the car was fine.

Well from what i know the octane number has to do with detenition, so a high compression engine needs a high octane gas or pre detenition will occur. The s2000 has a high compression engine so yes it would be best to use premimum gas. The lower the octane the faster it will ingnite which could damage your engine in the long run, tell me if im wrong?
While it is interesting to read the reasoning and stuff...the real bottom line is this, your car calls for a certain gas, it says in 2 places to use premium fuels, why is it such a question whether or not to ignore such? You save $6 on a fill up...what are you going to do? Save it? lol...its like the people and oil changes...do i really HAVE to get it every 3,000 miles? Of course not...and you might be fine letting it go 10,000 miles between oil changes, but why not do it in 3,000 mile increments if its been proven to prolong engine life and promote better running condition and less exhaust production because the engine is running optimally?
Whatever...im so sick of people trying to save a couple of bucks by questioning whether or not to use premium in their ******* SPORTS CAR. lol...im getting off my soap box now and im gonna go fill up with 94octane.

I do hope the S does retard timing (enough), in case I'm ever in a state like Oregon with it, in case the retard who pumps gas for you (its ILLEGAL to pump your own there) puts in the cheap ****.
I had this happen on my G35 Coupe when I was up there on a road trip...I noticed the needle did not swing all the way up and I told the guy to fill it. So I check the receipt and the douche had put in the cheap stuff. Thankfully, that car retarded timing enough, and I was gentle with her until I could fill with Premium 50 miles away and throw in a bottle of octane booster for good measure.
Be careful, and just use the good stuff, you have one high tech piece of machinery there...protect it. Please.

I'm in the same boat as you. Work fuel card but 87 only. My suggestion is to give your fuel card to your family member and have them pay for your gas. It's awesome that your company gave it to you, sucks you can't use it.
I drove my car around on 87 and it was fine. until it was stolen but thats another story.
I don't get the fuel card situation here at all. I can have the card and fuel a H2 but 20 cents more for premium, fogetabouiittt.
