How To: Gas shock hood strut, junkyard setup
i'll let the pics do the talking, but heres what i bought:
- VW rear hatch struts with ball ends ($15/pr used, i only used 1),
- drill bit to enlarge center fender hole to ball end thread size,
- 2x4 brackets from the hardware store cut and bent to shape, for reinforcing the hood's ball end mount point
- black spray paint for above
the hood closes on top of the strut with no extra room, but the hood still lines up properly.
the first pic of the hood half up is the point at which the strut takes over the lifting for you
the other pic is it up all the way.

actually any struts will work just as long as they are the right length, the right stiffness and have the ball ends WITH THE NUTS ON THEM, not the press/welded in kind.
as for stiffness, i had to put most of my weight on the 1 strut to get it to compress.
