Grinding noise/low idle

Grinding noise/low idle
Today I went to start my car and with my foot completely down to the floor with the clutch and the car still shifted into 2nd gear. I heard click click click grind. What could this have been? I tried again and it started but was idling very low. Later that day it started fine and drove good. What could this be ?
