FIRST FALL.... need help with brakes, (yamaha yzf600r)
so it was a fine morning when i decided to take my bike to work. Got on it and left the house. On familiar streets where i always drive and ride couple of times i came upon a light gravel on the road and well, rear wheel slipped from under me and i laid the bike down at 30-35 mph. When it fell, the brake handle took the hit and bend out away from throttle, Throttle handle got scratched, whole right side and front turning light broke off. As far as damage to me, jacket saved up my skin on elbow, shoulder, and wrist, but i scraped the **** of my knee cuz i slid on it for a couple of feet. Anyway, bike has cosmetic damage however the front brake got locked. I rode it home with half way locked front brake and it was smelling by the time i got home. (i didnt want to tow it) so now it is sitting at my shed and i want to know if anybody can suggest me something as far as getting the front brake unstock. I'm already buying new brake handle. And im going to take the whole brake assembly apart. When i forcefully drive it with the brake on it feels like its scraping the rotor in one spot as it rotates so i might have bend a rotor too. But i dont see how it could have happened. I guess what i'm asking is does anyone have a diagramm or a PDF copy of a manual for my bike(01 yzf600r). I can use any help i can get. Maybe a good bike shop in MD area? Thanks.
That rubbing you hear is the piston not retracting completely when you let off the brakes. Take the brakes off your bike and give the caliper a thorough cleaning where the pistons and dust shields are.
As far as what is causing your brakes to be locked it is a hydraulic system so either your brake lever is bent to where it is pushing the master cylinder in causing your brakes to become jammed against the rotors (Like you are constantly pulling the brake lever), or the pistons are not retracting. (Cleaning will fix the second problem, a new lever will fix the first.)
Take the lever off, then take a large C-clamp and compress the brake pistons back into the caliper (Like you would when doing a brake job on a car/bike etc....)
Then you can clean it with brake cleaner and that should cure the sticking problem.
Hey this is an r6 right? It has the twin round led lights on it right? Can you do me a favor? Can you measure the size of the circle tail light assemblies. I need to know how wide they are across. Hopefully they are 2.5 inches across.
If you could that would be very helpful to me.

I thought I had seen the r6 referred to by the name yzf600r somewhere.
I am aware of the yzf600, I didn't know they were labeling them with the r now. Shows how much attention I pay to yamaha's....

I'd measure it for you since you helped me but yeah, yzf600r and R6 are two diff bikes, sorry. BTW, i think it fixed the problem. I did what u told me, now the brakes dont lock. I havent taken it out yet to make sure everything is working right but when I roll it everything looks and sounds fine.
glad it worked out for you.
Steven
BTW I posted on the R6 board and no response there either. I guess r6 owners aren't willing to help out a honda rider
