1988 LXi slips out of 5th gear.
Hi,
New guy here.
I just inherited a 1988 Accord LXi. The car has sat garaged for years but is nearly pristine and only has 61k original miles so, I thought it would be worth putting a few bucks into.
I've redone the brakes and new rotors, new clutch, PP and throwout, new timing belt, serpentine belts, battery fluids etc. Fixed some headlight wiring problems.
Problem: This week was the first time I could actually take it out on the highway. For some reason, the shifter floats out of 5th gear and into neutral at highway speeds.
Any idea what the problem might be or how to fix it?
Thanks,
Frank

someone has been using 90 wt oil in tranny thus 5th gear did not get lubricated and burned up, i have seen this numerous times,,,,,,,,remove the rear cover of the tranny and inspect 5th gear assembly , i bet is is all rounded off
the whole 5th gear assembly is all worn out ,i have not seen any bad forks but a **** load of burnt out , rounded off gears ,,,now i dont know 100 % for sure if that is his problem but i have seen a lot of those and it is real easy to pull the back cover off and chk 5th gear assembly ,,and if it is worn that is what happen some lube shop put 90 wt oil in tranny
yup, it's your 5th gear set. that's the only problem with these manual transmissions. honda didn't have enough lube to the 5th gearset IMO. not to mention that a lot of shops would put in a heavier weight than these transaxles require (just as desert said). 5th gearsets are available in junkyards, or through online dismantlers and ebay. i have one sitting in a blown trans that's pristine. email me to make an offer.
