turbo on stock block B18c5's
what is is up.
im about to order a type-R engine swap for my 99 hatchback, and sometime down the road i plan to turbo it. my question is, how much can the USDM and JDM engine handle (psi) untill it becomes unsafe?on the stock block.im aware of the compresion ratios on both of these motors... also which engine is more preferable overall, not just for boost. JDM or USDM? thanks

If your gonna go boost go B18B. Especially if you plan on going turbo and staying stock. My friends LS turbo can hanle up to 9 lbs. of boost on stock internals.
But if you've got you heart set on a B18C5 than go all motor and get the JDM spec. Stock B18C5 on boost

you can go about 6 psi safely
Edit: It also depends on what set-up you are going with fuel pump, fmu, injectors = no more then 5 psi on stock R motor, but standalone maybe 6 but not too much more boost then that.

i beleive that the B18c jdm R and B18c5 are both great motors , but there good for N/A other wise your taking the purpose of the engine by being high CR , your rather of on going gsr and spend the extra money on up grades to fully built the for turbo !is not worth the $$ to spend on a b18c5 and then go turbo on it !
yes stock Comp. untill i save to redo the internals, the reason i asked this question was becuase the Meguairs Type-R was pushin 25 LBS through a stock block,, i was like WTF when i read that, im sure as hell not going to do that to my engine. but the b18c5 engine has some good qualities like the ported and polished intake(good for boost) and the block guard(also good for boost) although the compression ratios are high on both. with a metal head gasket and lower comp. pistons, will the rods and valvetrain be able to handle 12 lbs? or since im replacing the stock pistons with low comps ,, might as well spend the extra 1000$ or so to do all up the right way? thanks for your time and advice!
I say get a GSR or LS engine. Much better for turbo

they are only better if you are going to stay with stock compression.....other then that they have nothing on a turbo R motor.

Boost on stock block B18c5's And I'm the stupid one?
sounds like you have way too much money and just want to be able to say "yo I got a type r swap." It doesn't make any sense to buy a b18c5 to boost when you could buy a b18c1 to boost and it would probably be more ideal, and a hell of a lot cheaper. It makes even less sense to buy the type r when you are planning on changing the internals anyway
I hear what you guys are saying, but you really need to open your eyes and take a look at the electronics that are available to the public. Tuning a 11:1 comp motor is no sweat with a standalone, wide band and some general tuning knowledge. Hell i helped my friend tune is R hatch and he was running 12-14lbs daily driven. Off boost throttle response was excellent, as well as the responsiveness out of the turbo. I would actually recommend high compression turbo motors for daily drivers as long as you want to pay for 93 octane. The R engine is actually the best engine to turbo stock for stock. Although you can run much higher boost levels on a LS (case in point Stoopid ran a stock block LS at 18lbs making 390whp for over 2 yrs), the ability of the R engine to make massive amounts of power and torque is key to its high compression at lower boost levels. In closing if i were to boost a stock honda engine i probably would go with either a LS or R engine, I run the LS b/c of how cheap they are and how much power i have pulled out of numerous ones.
It all about tuning and fuel. You can safely run 5-6 psi but i would still spend lots of time on the dyno.
And like many answered above, if you plan on going turbo, i would get an ls or gsr swap. The extra money could be used to build the motor and buy an lsd.
These engines have nothing on an R motor in stock form but i wouldnt spend 5k on a R swap when you could put the extra money towards a built LS and make more power.
good luck
