Replacing a front axle
It appears that it's axle time on my 96 Accord 5-spd. It's making a rumbling-knocking noise above 40mph whenever you step on the gas.
I've been lucky enough not to ever have to fool with axles, so I could use a "how-to" on it if anyone would be so nice to share...
Thanks...

Usually axles make noise on turns when the outer joint is worn and if the inner joint is no good or lack of grease car shakes when accellerating ,,,i would make sure it is the axle before u waste ur money .........it does not sound like an axle noise to me ,,,chk your tires. wheel bearings ,,,,,,
now if you hear clicking noise on turns as well i would say axle for sure

No, it doesn't click at all. It doesn't shudder either under accelleration, but you can definately hear this noise at higher speeds..give it gas and it makes noise, let off and it quits.Weird, huh? I hope it's nothing really serious.
This noise especially if it is a wheel bearing that is just starting to go bad will be difficult to find as it may not make noise while up on a lift with no load on the bearing or axle but it is worth a try.
Statically get under the car and grab the axle near the inner joint and give it a good shake and compare the left axle to the right axle but in my experience the inner CV Joint going bad was pretty noticable through the floor board under your feet, have you riden in the passenger seat to see if you can feel it under your feet.
The next test is to drive down the beach with only the right or left hubs under water and the other side up in the sand, if the submerged side makes the car quiet, then that is the side with the bad bearing, the salt water will lubricate the bearing and quiet it down.
After that test I have some land down on the Gulf coast I will sell you cheap.
