what all is needed for the '89 trans swap?
i tried a search but it said the search engine is temporarily unavailable... i have a '93 Z6 swap in my '91 hatch now and was wondering what all i needed to make a '89 dx trans work with my motor and chassis... thanks

bolts right up.
same clutch/pressure plate
different throw out bearing. (as opposed to the hydro ones which i'm assuming is not on your car anyway being that it's a 91)

are you sure? ive been told that the spline count is different... someone said that 88 has a certain number, 89 has a certain number, and 90-91 have the same number of splines... so can anyone else varify that the 89 dx transmission will bolt directly up to the Z6? also there is an 88 dx transmission around here thats cheaper... what all would i need to swap that onto my motor? can i still use the same clutch that came with the Z6? thanks

i know the 88-91 do have diff clutches btwn the years my old a6 (89) was damn near impossible to find every place i went to showed me something diff. I think maybe the 88 hf is the same as all 89 models. Not sure about 90-91 though

In my 89 SI I used a 92up flywheel and clutch kit. The splines on the shaft on 89up are the same. The clutch, pressure plate, flywheels from 90up have a slightly bigger surface but have the same spline count. The 88's have the different spline count. So as long as you have a 89up matching set of clutch/flywheel/pressure plate you will be ok.

89-91 is the same spline count with the hydro tranny 92-95 and 96-00.... so the only year you cant really interchange and the reason why most people say stay away from the 88
ok just so to help me decide... what all do i need to convert an 88 transmission to work with my motor? or is it really a lot of work and therefore not worth it? thanks guys

I maybe be wrong but you may just need the 88 disk as it is smaller surface area on a bigger one will not be bad as opposed to a bigger one (90up) on a smaller surface. but ideally you will want an 88 disk, pressure plate, flywheel (and possibly throwout bearing and pilot bearing).
yeah but how much would shipping be? i would like an si tranny right now but its not realistic... not with my plans on turboing it soon and hopefully ill be moving back down to miami, fl within the next year and with the way gas prices are i am looking at gettin a dx tranny... thats the best option for me right now

Gas wise you won't notice a big difference. I would rather have si tranny for turbo or all motor but that is just me. I shipped a tranny from ga to fl and it was 75 bucks so md to oh should not be any more than that.
Crimson_Tide if you still have that si tranny i will take it if the shipping charges are reasonable my zip is 40475 find out a total including shipping and If the shipping is not out of this world I will buy it.
