NEED HELP!!! idle problems etc.
i have an 87 civic and when in nuetral with the clutch in it wont idle, it just cuts off every time. i tried cleaning the carb but it wasnt bad. and today its all jerky and undrivable. i need help, anyone have any ideas on what it could be??
hey there... i used to have a d15 carbed, 87 rex..... they're slightly more complicated than PGFI. how many miles are currently on your motor? what have you mechanically done to your motor right before it start to idle rough? is it back firing?
hello again, sorry for the late reply, I've been clocking in at 6am and clocking out at 7 to 8pm at work everyday last week (haven't been online).
Considering the mileage, the most likely culprit is the fuel delivery components of the carb. I rebuilt mine at 110k (87 rex = in 2003; 16 years old); If i can rem correctly there's a float bag inside the carb that dissolves over time due to the components within the fuel (equivalent to a 16 year old car rusting at the gas cap; due to excessive fuel spray on the paint/metal at the cap area). That bag feeds fuel to the motor as you step on the gas pedal; as the bag looses fuel (due to you stepping on the gas) a secondary fuel feed port in the carb kicks in to feed more fuel to the motor while the primary bag/ feed port is refilled with fuel.
Most likely, you’ll have to build the carb, check and replace all the vac lines (there’s a LOT), check/ replace the fuel delivery and return and you should be good to go. If you did any dist / ignition work, that could cause the symptoms your having (such as putting the sparks plug wires in the wrong places; adds back firing to your symptoms).
My suggestion, the money you’re going to spend rebuilding that old carb (if you cant find the parts in any auto parts store other than the dealer ship), you should invest in an Edlebrock electronic carb setup; completely swap all carbed components for a PGMFI setup (if you have the time and parts car) or look into buying something else. Maybe you could find another carb with lower mileage to drop in or take it to a shop for diagnostics……
