Default Need opinions.. b18c5 or K20a in 01 ITR.

Well a while back my brother bent a valve while driving on track with NASA. At this point we are looking at around 4-5k in repair and upgrading the motor with pistons, valve springs, deck the head and block..etc.. this was due to a bent vavle in cylinder 4.

Well we have another option on the table. We can get a K20a set up ( motor, tranny, ecu, axles, harness) for around the same price. Just need to spend another 1-2k on custom header and motor mounts.

Now my question is what would you guys pick?
B18c5 mildly built, or stock K20a with custom header?

Thanks for any input guys.

Oh also this will be going into a 01 ITR.

I thought about this too, but honestly, you'll spend a lot more on the K than you will on the B. (Not just one or two thousand more.) I'll eventually go K, but not while the swap cost is as much as it is.

Do the K and be different. You can always SC it later if you need more power.

Agree, I would like to tell everyone to go K so that all the hotness of the B will go away

Are there any reliability issues with either the K or the B? One having more potential life than the other?

I would probably go K series only because I have a friend with the swap done and his car dominates The six speed is sweet two. Not sure if that helps in a track situation. I believe the upgrades are more money though. ie - headers, internals, etc.

No issues regarding the k series in a DC2, only issues I have heard of are those regarding mis-shifts.

If the cost isnt crazy, I would go with the k. This is where the future of Honda engines is going in the aftermarket. Just in the last couple years there has been lots more parts produced. Not to mention that the 6 speed is sexy.

From what I've read, you don't want to over-rev the K. Other than that, OEM Honda reliability. A built B would be more stressed, and just wouldn't have that same OEM quality control. When the time comes for way more power (and way more money) I'm going with the K, despite having driven a very well built and VERY fast B-engined car.

I personally like the B. But thats just cause I am biased. The R came with the B so thats what I would put back in it even if I had the money for the K. Thats just me though. The K does rip pretty hard

If you have the money go for it. Thats what I plan on doing even though my engine is in perfect condition. I found a local shop to sponsor my swap so its going to save me a lot of money other wise it would cost close to 9-10k.

k = heavier motor

Does that mean the car wont be balanced as it is for road racing?

also the engine will turn 180 degrees and the ITR is not balanc designed for
that kind of rotation= much more money to balance the car left to right again.

so all and all depends on your pocket WELTHINESS.

No, the K20a swap weighs about what a B16 swap weighs.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by alispoon &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Does that mean the car wont be balanced as it is for road racing?</TD></TR></TABLE>

It'll actually lighten the front of the car, thus creating a better front:rear weight ratio.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by alispoon &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">also the engine will turn 180 degrees and the ITR is not balanc designed for that kind of rotation= much more money to balance the car left to right again.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Not really, based on the way the B series motor sits, the driver side is actually heavier to start with than the passenger side, and when you add the weight of the driver it gets worse. The K series motors place the bulk of the weight on the passenger side, thus when the driver sits in the car it creates a more favorable left:right weight ratio.

The only thing he's leaving out is that a FWD car NEEDS a front-biased weight distribution, something like 60/40 or even 70/30. I haven't seen any documented tests or anything, but really I'd expect it to be about the same F:R as a B-series. The K is a tad lighter and sits a tad more forward than the B. I'd guess that would even out.
