Default Excessive Carbon Build up on Head

Just took head off 1990 for the 2nd time to have it cleaned and noticed carbon all over valves, exhaust chamber, etc... I just had the head dipped and blasted a year ago and a friend driving behind me noticed that the engine was loading up-- black smoke out the back...

It is the TB FI, so anyone know what might be wrong?? Someone mentioned to check the EGR Valve but .. haven't really found it....

Rings gone?
Valves gone?
Valve seals gone?
What was the compression reading before ya took it apart?

I'm guessing it's more likely to be oil causing the carbon build up. Rich running, in my experience, doesn't really do that... it just blows black smoke out the exhaust... with minimum build up in the cylinders.

But without the compression test it would be very hard to tell.
