Default Question about Stock class for Auto-X

I just got my Si this weekend I am looking to get into auto-X. Since the season is nearly over I want to stay in the stock category before I go into the modified classification next year. I just want to clarify a couple allowed / illegal things for this class. Please let me know if I am on point or if I forgot anything.

-Need to keep within stock size wheel and tires with street treads on them
-Shocks can only be 2 setting adjustable - upgraded springs or coilover sets are prohibited
-Can replace the front sway bar only. No lower or rear.
-Brakes can only have different pads or rotors.
-No short shifter??
-Cat back exhausts are allowed, but intake / header modifications are not
-different gauges allowed inside the car

Did I miss anything else? I intend on doing all modifications allowed for this class, I just don't want to shortchange myself or outclass my car either. Any help would be appreciated, as I will start looking for events to attend in the next 2 weeks or so. I tried to search on this but did not come up with anything. This is my 1st post on the forum and I apologize if it not formatted correctly. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Another question to go along with this. Since the season is almost over is it really worth while to become a SCCA member for this year or just wait until the beginning of the season next year? Also for stock / light mod class is it worth it to go for any sort of licensing?

You've got a good handle on what's allowed. Here's a few things that you are a little off on.

Stock wheel size and width is required. Offset has to be within 1/4". ANY tire that fits and is DOT approved is allowed.

Stock replacement rotors are allowed, but no crossdrilled/slotted/etc (not that it would help you anyway). Pads are free, and brake lines can be changed for stainless if the car is old enough. (1991? or older)

Everything else looks like you've got it 100% right.

not sure if i'm just confused by your wording, but:

shocks don't have to have only 2 settings, they just can't be adjusted for more than 2 different characteristics.

An SCCA membership is good for a year from the date you purchase it. So if you buy it on 9/5/05, it will be good until 9/5/06. I'm not really sure what you are asking in your second question. For autocross the only license you need is your state supplied driver's license. All other SCCA licensing is for wheel-to-wheel racing.

A ProSolo license is required to run more than 1 ProSolo per season. However, that effects maybe only 400 drivers in the country.

Be careful there. Any replacement rotor is allowed provided it is OEM or an OEM equivalent. No cross-drilled or slotted rotors.

Otherwise you've got it.

And I wouldn't worry about waiting to become an SCCA member. Once you become a member you'll get a subscription to the coolest magazine evAr, SportsCar

Maybe I should include this in my signature.

Your first and only mods for the first few years should be as follows.

SCCA membership
A set of Mechanix gloves
Money for lots of events
Money for food and water
A nice folding chair
A canopy if you can

Run as many events as you can, go to events every weekend. More events will make you faster more quickly than spending hundreds and thousands on mods. You will still get spanked by the guy with the Dodge Dart on DOT slicks since you are a noobie.

Welcome to the addiction of autox, glad you chose this over more dangerous on street options.

94accordsedan - that is pretty much what I am gearing towards and why I want to start off in the stock class. The total price of mods is < $1000 but at least puts me on par with being "maxed" out for the stock category. Since I bought my Si (purchased it 2 weeks ago and picked it up on Friday... live in NJ - bought in Tampa, FL) I have been reading up on the sport and have acquired a huge interest in it. For the rest of this season (and probably next season) float around the stock category to imrpove my skills @ the tracks.

I have a preliminary build of what I am going to purchase, however the 1 thing that I need to get more familiar with is the suspension aspect of it. The rest is pretty straightforward... c/b exaust is going to most likely be the Greddy Evo2 (read a lot of good reviews on it), Front sway bar is most likely going to be neuspeed, although comptech is another viable choice, the last "add-on" that is allowed is the shock setup.

That is where I need some suggestions if possible. What shocks would keep it legal for stock category but give me the best results? Also what does 2 adjustment settings higher exactly mean / which shocks will give me those adjustments allowed?

Sorry for the longwinded posts, but I for 1 hate spamming threads / post whoring and 2 have only 5 posts per day with my "noob" status and would like to get as much information as possible, because each week that I wait thats one less weekend that I will get under my belt before the season ends.

Thanks in advance for further responses and thanks to previous people that responded

You hit the nail on the head. The most important mod you can possibly make is tires. When you are really ready to start winning or at least when the competition bug bites, you'll want to get R compounds, though I wouldn't recommend it until you have at least a season on street tires. The new Azenis 615's seem to be the crowd favorite along with the new Hankooks and the Kumho MX'es seem decent too. As far as an exhaust, in stock class it's something not worth justification unless part of you wants to rice it up on the boulevard (like I used to ). The power gain is soooo minimal. Only at the national level, might it make a .00001 difference. Plus, if you really want to go ahead and get shocks now, the Koni Yellows seem to work great with our cars.

Is the Civic in GS with the RSXes? I don't think my club here in Raleigh has had any stock SI's race in two years.

-Matt
