S Transmission Light Problem
I have a 1990 Honda Accord EX with an automatic Transmission. About a month ago my S warning light on the dash began flashing at random times while driving. Now it stays on continuously (not flashing) for approximately a mile everytime I drive the car. I have heard you can check this light the same as you can check the CEL for codes. I am wondering if this is true. If so, how do I check it and where can I find the codes? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Try this link to see if it helps you get the flash code.

Usually if the S light is flashing you have a faulty speed sensor. It is located on the transmission right where the spedo cable goes in if I'm not mistaken. Usually, this will not throw a CEL so you can't pull a code using the jumper wire to the best of my knowledge. Hope this will help.
integ6657 Is apparently filthy rich; anybody that suggests parts replacement as a method of diagnosis has a lot more money than they have COMMON SENSE
thanks 4 your reply
I am giving few more details about my car. when the S light is on it runs little slower and when you try to give it gas the rpm increases but not the speed.
when it flashing the speed is fine but when it is continues it slows down a little bit. all this are random but sure once a day.

wow.......lol lol please don't get me wrong i am not laughing at you just at your comments i don't think there is a line of common sense on anything you wrote...
first off when the S lite flashes it is not automatically the speed sensor it could be a **** load of things
second it has an electronic v.s.sensor no cable..
third if v.s.sensor goes bad it will throw a code ..
and last, my friend you need to diagnose before you suggest that someone starts replacing parts , i dont know if that's the way you do it on your own car , or just because you are spending someone else's money but either way you have to diagnose thus you can fix problem correctly the first time

I've spent 9 years diagnosing honda and acuras and am a gold level technician. {not trying to be an ***} however, I'm am in no way telling him to not try to figure out what the problem is but this is pretty common in his year honda. Thats why I suggested he look there first. I in no way suggested he "replace" anything. If you will also read my post, i said "to the best of my knowledge" implying that I'm not a ****** know it all. I was simply trying to give the guy a place to start. My apologies for the miscommunication.

no offense Integ ,,,you can call me all the names in the book , but i would never expect a gold level tech to make comments such as you did ,,,again you have been diagnosing cars for 9 years??? you should know better ,,before you do anything you need to get the code to see where the problem might be...
second you are telling him the speed sensor is located on rt side where the speedo cable goes in ??? man if this poor guy does not have a clue he could be looking for a very long time ... no offense but only a rookie would give that advice ..and 1 more thing you say u are not a ******* know it all ....according to your statement you are a gold level technician , 9 years?? heck you should know hondas almost inside and out and especially the v.s sensor system an a 90 accord

Hey Guys,
Thanks to everyone who has replied. Unfortunately, I am not yet clear on the code reading. Do I check the same wire as for the check engine light? I have done this in the past so I know where the plug is and how to bridge it, but I didn't know if it is the same wire for the S transmission light. If not, it would be awesome if someone could tell me precisely where it is, because I can't find anything in my Haynes manual about this light or how to diagnose it.
Thank you in advance,
Kris

short the two pins with a jumper cable.
turn the ignition key on. count the "s" light. it can be two digit or one digit. if it is one digit, there will be a long gap between the number it shows and the next number. If it is two digit, there will be a short pause between the two digit.
I suggest you to reset the computor by removign the battery capble for 10 minutes. press brake or turn the key on (i'm not sure if it really helps). Later, connet the battery, and check for the code. if there is none, test drive it and get the code.
OK. i have the same problem and my code is (9). any of you guys ahve any idea what 9 stands for. (91 honda accord dx 4dr.)
thanks.

it is the same plug,,,,,,,,jump it and cound the flashes on the instrument cluster ,,,,,,long flash = 10 short flash = 1 read and post results..
1 more thing if u want to clear the code u dont have to disconnect the battery, press on the brakes like it was suggested, simply remove the back up fuse ,7.5 amps for 15 seconds from the underhood fuse box

hi
dude U may be right. My car speedometer often does not work, I assume that the sensor might have noticed the speed before I did. as soon as it sence the speed not working even for few seconds it will starts flashing till
I switch off my car. Still it is so confusing to me as some times even though the speedometer stops for few seconds S light does not flash.
There is another problem too the same green light some times continuously on when I start the car while still parked and the light is off after the car warmsup and rearly while I am driving.
So I am thinking flashing is something to do with speed as you had guessed and continues on light yet to figure out.
