Default new car...burnt crusty sh*t in engine from old oil!

okay i posted in an earlier thread that my gf new 97 prelude was overheating when i put on the ac...i found out that the ac fan doesnt come on...what can cause it to go out?...how can i fix it?

she just bought the car last week so today was the first time i checked up on it...also noticed that it was leaking oil from the cam seal on the vtec soloniod side....so i need to change that too

the car was sitting for a few hours and i found out that it was still hot to the touch...opened the oil cap and found my biggest problem....i seems like the oil hasnt been changed for years...smoke was coming out of the oil cap and looking inside i see all kinds of burnt crust...the cap was also crusty...looks like carbon buildup everywhere inside the head!....it scared the **** outta me...can old oil cause this or was something else poured into the engine?...how can i get rid of it?....the oil was pure black and hella thin when i drained it...i put in new oil and a new filter...the car still drives pretty smooth...whats the next step i should take?...she bought it from a small dealer too with no warranty

always check the oil (among other things) before you buy a car, i feel bad for her ... but a lesson learned indeed. good luck with the prelude

check to see if its the fan motor itself, or the relay not clicking over for the fan. The oil cap screws into the valve cover, not the head. Its somewhat normal to have some burnt oil in there as oil doesnt "circulate" through the valve cover. if its cold outside, and you open the oil cap its normal to have some smoke come out, since thats whats causing the burnt oil stains on the inside anyhow. Id do all the normal tuneup stuff to it: plugs, wires, cap and rotor.

the ac fan... check the wiring... i think it has its own connector. check that. i would go ahead and check all the fuses. this prelude seems like it has been through hell. poor thing. and i honestly would get the compression checked to see how well the engine is running. good luck

well yea it looks like thick carbon gunk inside the valve cover, which to me is the head isnt it?...i shined the flashlight in there and its everywhere all around the cam caps and rockers etc

the car still drives pretty smooth and strong though compared to alot of cars i driven...engine sounds fine....has 130k

the ac fan is the one on the passenger correct for 97 preludes?...because on my tegs and other hondas the ac fan is on the driver side...just making sure because thats the one that doesnt come on

Check the fan connections and fuses first, could be the fan motor, if not you may have a short somewhere. I had the same problem with my old Grand Am, ended up being a bad connection. As far as the crusty sh*t, If you changed the oil and the car still runs fine, i would think your ok, but it sounds like the car has been mistreated and you may want to check on the timing belt, odds are it hasn't been replaced.
