Honda used to recommend 5W-30 SAE motor oil for our transmissions, back when they were being produced. Nowadays the dealers will tell you to use Honda MTF (Manual Transmission Fluid), but I've pulled apart 200,000-mile L3 transmissions that still looked new inside, and that were always run with "motor oil" in them...

The transmission will hold 2 containers of Honda MTF (about 1.9 quarts, I believe it is). If you fill it using the proper transmission fill hole, the fluid (or oil) will just start to drip out when it's full.

THANK YOU. I was thinking that the whole time I was reading down the thread. The chiltons says you add 1.8 quarts after a flush and 1.9 when its completely empty. Around the time that 2nd quart of oil is empty it does start pouring out the fill hole. Most manuals tell you to use the 5w-30, I still do.

well have the new tranny in welded diff.. runs good but today for some odd reason didnt want to go into 3rd 4th 5th didnt try reverse wanted to get it home.. so im driving about 30 miles in 2nd gear and when i shut the car off.. i was trying to get it into those above gears and it did.. easily.. when i cracked the case to weld the diff. the tranny looked brand new ran great (no grinds felt like a new tranny) but now this is happening im going to pull the tranny out and see what the hell is going on.. and when i was trying to put it in them gears it felt like them gears wont even there no sound no clicking nothing any suggestions on what the hell is going on..
and i wasnt pushing in the clutch it would make a sound like something was scraping inside the tranny.. i have a act four puck and act prolite flywheel..

You could have hit something and messed up your linkage. With all these tranny problems have you replaced the bushings on the shift linkage? Do you use the bitch pin? some ppl use a nut and bolt and that can give you a lot of play and make it almost impossible to get into gear.
