Default 96 DX (D16Y7) question about CAI

Hi!

I have a question about the CAI... DX's have verticaly positioned throttle body and that makes the installation of "classic" CAI's impossible...

I want to discard the whole filter box and install JUST cold air intake that connects directly to the throttle body...

Is there any kit that solves this problem or should DX owners pay someone to make custom intake pipe that connects directly to the throttle body???

Umm they do make cold air intakes just for that application.

Is it worth the money???

Can you feel the difference from i.e. K&N drop-in filter...

Right now I have a K&N drop-in filter inside the stock air-box and I can say I am satisfied with result... engine breaths better and there are no power gains (like expected)... just breaths better and I like that...

Would AEM CAI make a noticable difference or is it a waste of money over the K&N drop-in?

I don't know really...I've had it in the car for a few years. It does sound good though. I can tell you I didn't feel any increase over my DIY intake I had on before this.

Damn sometimes i miss my old motor.

My old setup was d16y7 with: aem cai, aem tru pulley kit, kamikaze header, after market exhaust. It performed very well. It was automatic of course. Other than that. I really think the Aem CAI did quite a bit for my car. You can always make it short ram as well for the rain thing. I say the aem is very well worth the cash.

I think all bolt ons are a waste of money personally unless you go all the way with them. $150 for an AEM intake by itself is NOT worth it to me. Just my opinion though

HAHAHA. Sometimes the automatic came in handy. I think with the mods i had, for an auto it performed very well. I had no problems...

Well alot of people on here say that I/H/E bolt ons for the D-series motors are a waste of money. I suppose that all depends on how you look at it. I dont have the exact same motor as you (I have d16y8) but it is very close. I decided I wanted an intake for the little power increase and began researching. I found that the AEM SRI for my EX was only $70 shipped. That seemed like a resonable price so I bought it and I couldnt be more pleased. It didnt make a huge difference but it gave more mid and high range power as well as making ALOT of noise (I wish it wasnt so loud). So in general poeple on here will say that intakes for D-series are worthless but I say go ahead and do it. I think you will be happy with it as long as you arent expecting too much (ie- the people that think intakes give +20whp).

All I expect from an intake is BETTER BREATHING and I don't expect even 1 horsepower...

I just want my car to REACT properly when I push the pedal and that is IMPOSSIBLE using stock filter... drop-in K&N makes it a bit better but sometimes (not always) engine just struggles to take a breath... then I have to take my foot of the pedal for a split-second and give it again and then it reacts the way it should...

I just want that breath to be always there when I need it

Well the CAI would make it breath better but keep in mind that with most SRI and CAI you loose some low end power. So when you are referring to pushing the pedal and it imediatly going, it will do so above around ~3k RPM but under ~3k you will loose throttle responce. The point of making an engine breath better is generally used for high RPM improvement.
