Default Valve/Head inspection.

I have lots of valve chatter. I have checked and adjusted the valves. I'm sure that I did this correct. I did use the stock specs. I realize that people recomend a thousandith smaller on the clearances. Could this be the only problem, or could I have another issue.

I plan on readjusting all the valves 0.001 smaller, but I would like to know of places to look for damage while I'm in there. Its been too many times w/ the head off using the stock clearance and the result is chatter.

thanks
matt

I changed the clearances from EXH 0.007" INT 0.006" to EXH 0.006" and INT 0.005" and it worked really well. I didn't really want to go that small, because I was afraid that I may burn a valve-set or something.

The car makes no unusual sound on cold-startup and feels like it pulls alittle smoother. This could be to me being more experienced and doing a better job. It took about 1.5hr start to finish.

The lash spec is kinda loose to allow 30k inspection intervals. If you're willing to keep tabs on it, there is nothing wrong with running them a little tighter. You are right though, you run the risk of burning the EX valves if they don't seat all they way, because they are mainly cooled by transferring heat to the seat. The lash actually stays about the same as the engine warms up. Aluminum expands more than steel when heated, but the EX valve runs hotter than the head so the overall lash doesn't change a lot from hot to cold.

Thanks for the scoup Pirate.
Would it be a better idea to set the exhaust valve-slash at OEM and the intake alittle smaller, or is it normally that the exhaust is the only side that makes noise any ways? Idealy I don't want to check this all the time, but it bothers me to hear the noise. I guess I don't have a good choice.
