yes valve springs wear out. but theres no real set time limit. depends on how they are used.

Depending upon how much heat they take for being worked up and down they will loose pressure.

could it make a vavle slip and hit a piston or does it just make the valve stick open?

On the exhaust it may not close the valve in time.

Not enough spring pressure will cauze the valve to bounce on the seat and this pounds out the valve job and looesen seats.

don't worry. if the valve sticks open or closes too slowly, the piston will close it.

Vavle seats can go loose when you have enough valve bounce.

Springs are a life saver in perf. motors. Trackmasters use to build alot of high hp turbo motors. Alot of them would blow from overeving due to the turbo motors breaking tires loose etc and slamming into the rev limit. After they started using stiffer springs this pretty much cured that problem.

Nascar teams replace the valve springs, after every event on $80,000 motors. That may give you a clue. Valve springs and retainers are consumables and should be replaced every rebuild or every time the motor is taken apart.
