Default 99 AT Trans Service

I have a 99 Accord 4cyl AT. I am servcing all the fluids ie: replacing them with fresh (51,000). Is there a trans filter screen? If not, should I just R&R the fluid through the filler or should I pull the pan and replace any screen that may exist. Your thoughts.

I don't want to sound like a dick.... but when you provide advice to people, it would be good if you knew what you were talking about. A 99 Accord does NOT have a transmission pan. It has a drain plug that goes right into the ALL ALUMINIUM CASE. There is no screen you can access or clean with out removing the transmission from the car and splitting the case open. Seriously... I know you own a Honda, but that doesn't make you an expert. As for the service... it's drain and fill. It will take about 2.5 qts.... use only Honda ATF. And as for the magnet idea... believe it or not, Honda actually thought about that. The drain plug has a big magnetic end on it.

I'll note it in the book
I'm glad Honda agrees with me, but sad that they decided to make them throw-away transmissions (can't service them)

guess what you sounded like a dick ..... this guy is asking a question to learn there is no reason you have to reply like this ... just explain the answer to his problem and the problem will be solved .... in this case this guy is a new member and a reply like that only scares off the new users and makes them think that we are unfriendly here and that is not the case ..... remember this is the accord forum the people that come here usually know little to very little about cars and most would like to learn about them ...

i agree that my answer was more corse than it needed to be. However it wasn't directed at the person asking the question. I get irritated by all the bench racing and "implied knowledge" that is present on this board. The following statements are NOT directed at anyone in particular... If you are not sure about something ask someone that knows... If you don't know, don't guess... Don't rely on sport compact car mags for all of your automotive knowledge, just because you own a civic or an integra and somehow hacked in a different motor, you're not an expert. PLEASE ANSWER PEOPLE'S QUESTIONS, BUT MAKE SURE YOU ARE CORRECT IN THE INFORMATION YOU PROVIDE!!!!!! There's nothing worse than giving someone who knows only a little baout cars the wrong info. If you get together 100 people that each know a little bit about cars, that doesn't make then collectively an expert. Rant over.

DO A DRAIN AND FILL. or (against the recommendations of Honda) you can do a flush with a wynns machine. I did a flush on my car at 90K because the previous owner did not have any recods after 30K for trans service.

I have a 1993 Accord. Is it the same way, no filter just a drain plug. I just bought the car last week and haven't had time to crawl under it yet.

yo Honda,,,,,, i hear what u r saying and to be honest sometimes i shake my head in disbelief at some of the advises i read people give , but in their way they are trying to help , you and a few others might have a bit more experience so we know that it is totally way off the wall but to their credit they also believe that the answer they are giving is the right one and only trying to be helpful.....
just do not let it get under your skin . all u can do is be friendly and give your opinion ( advise) and it is up to the individual which 1 to take ,,eventually the right answer will surface and giving enough help and right answers the people here wil come to respect you and your ability ..........

I appreciate the active effort to assist me in my basic of questions.
It may be my inability to comprehend but, please confirm the answer.
Am I correct that the answer is: Drain from the plug & Fill with Honda trans fluid. No pan nor screen to service. Correct?

Also, is it necessary to use HONDA Transmission Fluid. Can't I use a high quality national brand. Is it THAT different? Thanks for your continued patience with me. QuietGiant

I am also curious what the factory tech thinks about this. I know that you can't buy as good a trans fluid from an auto parts store as what comes from the factory( ford & GM that is).

This is the exact wording from the May '95 servicenews:

We have nothing against other major brand manufacturs... but their ATF wasn't designed specifically for the Honda transmissions... Ours was.

Honda ATF is different than others. Other brands will work, but shift quality will be worse. Just buy the Honda fluid... it isn't that costly.

As for the procedure.... drain from the plug, refill. It will take between 2.5 and 3 qts.
