Default GSR ecu on a LS motor

whats up guys, i had a real quick question...

I have a buddy of mine who let me borrow a obd1 p72 ecu, he told me i could throw it in my LS with no problems. I just wanted to make sure i wont have any problems with the gsr ecu, the engine is an all motor obd1 LS set up. The motor's not stock though, it has CTR pistons with some crower cams and im 100% sure the block can handle the revs (arp rod bolts) so i should be good there.

Just makin sure...

thanks ahead of time!

The p72 ecu will throw a couple of codes.
You can however have the p72 chipped to run your non-vtec motor.

oh really?

i just fegured when vtec's suppose to engage that it would just dump a lot of fuel but i had no idea it would limit revs altogether at 5500rpms

it will throw vtec and knock codes but wont be able to identify them becuase there is no vtec. i have heard of gsr's used for ls's and such. so i would say no problem there

i don't have a clue why you would want to do this, other than to say you did. your fuel will be all wrong as will be your ignition table, so you run serious risk of BOTH running too rich AND detonation from too much spark advance. just chip your LS ECU. then you'll have a permanant solution that isn't too expensive. an hour or two on the dyno or with a wideband, EGT, and experienced tuner on the street and $80 worth of hardware goes a long, long way.

oh, dont get me wrong.. this was NOT my idea. My buddy was just begging me to put it in and told him there is more to it then that. I plan on chipping my ecu and getting uberdata, that to me seems like the biggest bang for the buck.

thanks for help anyways though, now i can show him why not to put the ecu you in

Your best bet is to try it, find out that your rev limit comes on too soon, then try something else.

You may not make any power, but you can try it. Whats the worst that can happen? One run with a rich A/F wont kill the motor. And even if the spark advance is off, it wont matter much if the engine is running rich. I doubt you will get detonation and if you do, retard the timing at the dist. a couple degrees. I would try it, but still get tuned.
