do you know if this will use any other sensor besides the one that AEM sells?

The one AEM includes is a Bosch type. I assume other wide band O2 sensors will work however they would have to be wired to the harness.. I'm not sure why that matters??? I am including one..

so when the aem one ***** out (like most do) you can just buy a $60 one opposed to the $150 aem. I am interested, I will get back to you.

A $60 wideband sensor?? are you thinking of a standard narrow band sensor?? They aren't the same.

the plx and innovative Wideband VW sensors are $60, and yes that are 5v wideband

it wont work, because the harness has a built in resistor in the connector to correctly get it to work with the aem box
