Default Cam timing theory question

I was wondering about the general effects of cam timing. I understand that a dyno is necessary for any real tuning, but I am interested just for kicks.

I'm under the impression that as a general rule a retarded cam will improve the high end, while advancing will improve the low end. Is this true, or am I backwards?

True for good cams, but not my stock ones? I am just wondering what effect my half tooth off is doing...
