hs student with ideas and a budget
ok ive changed my mind so many times over the past few months is sad
1st wanted turbo
2nd nitrous
3rd supercharger
and once again im thinkin about nitrous
here is why and i wanna know if it sounds resonable:
ok ive got an automatic which will be changed over to a manual. The car is a 97 ls (first car) and its of course a daily driver and in the future weekend fun at the drag strip. I wanted a turbo but after thinkin about how much i would have to save and upgrade it wasnt worth it and i know with turbo and supercharge u have to run 93 or better, which would kill me cause of the gas prices (could use it sometimes but not all the time). I know the n2o would cost me alot to get filled up but i think i wont be using it that much mainly due to my no street racing policy and just weekend fun (legally) plus i figure it would be alot easier on the wallet (short term anyway)
what u guys think?

if your on a budget how much are you paying for this tranny swap? anyway nitrous is a good set-up for someone on a budget and since its only for track days that would be the cheapest way to go.
well ive got a deal on everything but a tranny for 250 so if i can find a good tranny for not much more i will continue with the swap otherwise i might just keep the auto and run the nitrous setup

Don't even bother with the nitrous. Swap the tranny.

well my mom is making me pay car insurance and phone bill so outta my small check i put alittle money aside for mods and my budget isnt like 500 hundred dollars if i can find a decent tranny for a good price everything i want i can get but as far as a turbo setup its outta the question

what do you guys think is a reasonable price for a manual tranny (hydro)? ive seen ls trannies for $300, b16's for $450 and gsr's for $500 and type r's for $1000+
If your on a budget, leave it stock. Once you start tinkering u can't stop and trust me there will be many repairs! Plus u can't tell me you wont keep your finger off that spray button been there done that!
if you cant afford a new motor on the fly dont buy mods that will put in a situation to potentially need one. I think nitrous is a good means to make additional power but be realistic, **** happens. Dont set yourself up for a stressfull situation and if your worried about the cost of 93 octane you'd have an anurism if you popped a motor.
What you should do is, first get a B16 or GSR tranny, then when you save up some more money a few months down the road set your LS motor up for a VTEC head. That will be a great gain over what you have now, wont cost to much more then nitrous, and will be a little easier on your head not worrying about it. Plus you can use Vtec whenever you want without refilling it.

fast hp = nitrous. however, it can be dangerous for the auto tranny because the torque convertor might not be able to take the power.
going from auto to manual can get very expensive. theres a good article on h/t on how to do it. search the topic and you'll get an idea of how much you're going to be looking at spending.

if u want to be fast n20 is best bang for the buck in short term but anytime you add power to a motor u risk breaking things(so don't spend all your money at once--and u mentioned 93 octane gas--which u will prob want to run if u spray)
all i can say tho is don't rush into anything......when i was younger and on such a limited budget i just bought piece by piece until i got everything i needed to put together my ls-vtec..........
if i were u i would start piecing together what i needed for the manual tranny swap (there are a lot of parts, trust i know) either that or if u think it would save money sell your car and buy a 5-spd

very good policy. i hope you can stick to it, unlike 99.99% of the members of HT. you have to realize that if you modify your car, youll start catching unwanted attention, such as ricers trying to race you at every light, and of course the po-pos.
on the other hand, you might as well sell your car and get a 5 speed. it will save you plenty of money and headaches. if your budget is as small as you say it is, and you have enough self control, id say go with a small shot of nitrous. if you never hit it on the street, you can still full up your gas tank with the cheap **** and fill it up with premium only when you go to the track.

u know whats funny ive barely got anything done to my car except for rims, intake, tails, and clear corners and ive already got people tryin to race me lol. Like today for instance a freakin porcshe pulled up and started rev and rolled down his window and said lets go. If i were just anybody i probably would have tried just for fun but ive seen to many wrecked cars from street races so its a nooooooooooo go for me on the street.

I agree 100% seriously man, best case scenario... say you get a nitrous setup; the car will need to be tuned otherwise you will be putting out for a new engine. You will only be able to run a small shot or you will be putting out for a new engine. If you run a JRSC on your ls you will be wasting your money because the hp gain is minimal. And I will let the turbo guys speak about that because I have minimal experience there. At any rate, for whatever you decide to get, plan to pay alot (unless you are mechanically inclined) for the install. And as others have said, once you start you just can't stop. I just pulled my engine/tranny to work on my 300whp JRSC setup in my GSR. I was just not happy with 225 like everyone else. Just study hard and wait until you have the money to dump into your car or you have decided to make it a priority like many of us here on h-t. If I am wrong about anything, someone feel free to correct me. I hope this helps you make your decision.

They bother me all the time, so I tell them that their Euro Homo car looks like my ball sack on steroids.
Euro owners are too cocky.

3 yr ago or so, i had a hatchback that had a b20/vtec that made 230whp. It was quick as hell and beat almost everything i raced. Fast forward to now, yipty doo.. I had a fast car, big deal. If i had to do it all over again, the time and energy i spent on my car, i wished i spent it on something more productive. It's just a car man... So you build a fast car, what's that gonna get you? Good thing I sold it 3 yrs ago to some HS kid while it was still worth something n got something out of it. You'll never be happy. If you make good hp, there will always be someone out there that's faster than you. So what do you do? keep spending spending until either you are out of money or grow out of it. You should just save yourself the trouble and not even get into it.
