Default Oil consumption Problem

I havn't posted in along time but I need some information.

Ok I so far have had the 98 Honda prelude for 2 years or so, Its always burned some oil but seems to be slowly getting worse. I think its at a point were I need to do something about it. I usually use 3 qts every 3 or so Months, Of course i replace it when it needs it, checking it regularly and what not. But it is smoking every once in awhile after it idles, it has 115,000 miles on it, driven hard. The performance on it doesn't seem that bad and eventually Ill run a compression test on it.

But if the compression is good what can be the cause of this oil leaking, bad valve seats? Or what?

If i need a rebuilt whats cheaper, Buying a rebuilt shortblock, or taking the engine out of the car and taking it to a machine shop to have everything resurfaced and parts picked out for assembly.

I need to find a resonable option for less than $1,500. Alse i want to do is fix this oil burning problem and get a engine rebuild out of it.

What are some websites for rebuilt H22A shortblocks?

Also, the engine never smokes on just idle, only after it sits for a couple minutes and I apply throttle it lets of a puff of white smoke. So maybe that helps with finding the leak?

Can anyone tell me how to find the oil leak?

Sorry I'm probably not helping but I find it odd that you only fill up 3qts. I usually am using a little over 5

I think he means he burns 3 quarts every 3 months, not uses 3 quarts for an oil change. If you mean your car is burning 5 quarts every 3 months then you may have a problem.

Anyways, 3 quarts every 3 months isn't too bad, but it's more important to know how many miles you put in during those three months. My car has bad rings, & I burn a quart every 70 miles. My suggestion would be to do a compression and leak down test. Despite my bad rings, my compression is still 225-230 on all cylinders, it wasn't until I did a leaddown that I concluded my rings were shot (all over 20%). Compression testers are cheap, and leakdown testers cost about the same or slightly less then a shop will charge you to do a leakdown test. So if you have an air compressor I'd suggest buying the leakdown tester as well.

Once you determine what your problem is, the head or the block, then you can determine the best course of action to remedy it.

Yes most likely it is that your rings are gone or if you have Vtec i know on a b169 i know it is different from a H22), but there is a hole in the block i belive close to the 4th piston for vtec i cant remember what it is for althought i am having the same problem and that is what i was told by a guy who knows Honda engines. Although i think my rings are gone.
