quick "tdc" question for an 89 crx dx with d15d7
just need to know where my crankshaft needs to be as far as top dead center. There is an arrow on the block, which i am assuming is the mark, but i want to make sure because it sits at about "1 o clock". as opposed to the camshaft gear, the word "UP" has to point straight up. I'm confused. is the arrow the correct mark to align the pulley? if so, the pulley will have a knotch to align with the mark, right?
yes line up the arrow on ut valve cover to the white mark on ur crank pulley...this is how u get the bottom end to tdc...now when u have it lined up take a look at ur cam gear and see it needs to be adjusted...

the only problem is that there was no timing belt cover on the engine when i got it. I replaced the head due to a broken camshaft from the previous owner. and now i must line it up right before putting on the new timing belt. is there a mark on the block itself to align the crankshaft with?
not so sure about the d series block but on my b16 there is...u said urself that there is an arrow on the block...line it up to that arrow

but if your looking at it from the drivers side front wheel well, the arrow sits at about 1 o clock. then, when i put the crankshaft pulley on, you cant see the arrow anymore.
when you have a ratchet or wrench on it so that you can turn it to adjust it, turn it until the arrow is straight up you should sort of be able to feel a let off or a balance point while turning, when you do, stop that should be tdc.

For a cross-reference,you can pull the #1 spark plug
and use a long screwdriver to "feel" of the pistons position..

now thats the response i was looking for! (the screwdriver) as far as marking it with a sharpie, I wanted to know if the pointer was the correct mark to go off of. notice that i said it was at about 1 o clock on the block instead of straight up? That was really the question i should of asked. Should the white mark be straight up or back a little bit on the pointer on the block.
for sux my dx, how are are supposed to line up a white mark on your"valve cover" with the pulley? dont you mean the "TIMING COVER"?
without the timing cover, pull off the crank pulley and the timing belt gear has a slit in it that lines up with the arrow on the oil pump

Tell me about it, I want to kill the engineer that put the timing marks on a removable piece of plastic....
FYI: When the woodruf key is at 12 o'clock on the crank pulley, you are close to tdc. I know on my d15b2 there are no timing marks on the block.

im telling you, on the oil pump theres a mark that you line up with the timing belt gear little slit and that puts you at tdc
