Yes, either one will work fine. 205/50-16 is 0.5 percent smaller than stock in outer diameter, and 215/50-16 is 1.1 percent larger than stock. However, there are many, many tires to choose from in 205/50-16, whereas only a few come in 215/50-16. So I would advise concentrating on 205/50-16...

205/55-16 is 20 mm wider than your stock tire size (185/70-14) and it's also 2.8 percent larger in outer diameter. In addition to your speedometer and odometer being off, and the slower acceleration that will result, there's a good chance it will rub. But you'll have to try it to be sure.
Why did you get tires that are too big, when you knew which sizes would fit okay?

Sure, go for it! Even if they rub, they might only do so on turns, when the suspension is compressed. They can probably get you by for a few months, like you say...
P.S. Free tires are my favorite kind of tires. Great "bang for the buck".
