anyone have rattle around 5k rpm on their f4i?
i can't tell what happens, but around 5000 rpm, my bike starts to rattle a fair bit and the engine has a more "hollow" sound. a little higher or lower rpm and it's super smooth. it's just around there in every gear. i can't decide if something is loose or this is just standard with f4i's...anyone else notice this?

Sounds like the camchain maybe?

i believe everyone has that rattle, because everyone's cam chain tensioner (CCT) goes out after a while. The CCT applies pressure to the cam chain, and they weren't manufactured with longetivity in mind apparently. If you can picture a screw threading in to a bolt, using spring pressure, think of the threads slowly wearing down and then wiggling. The sound you hear is the threads of the CCT vibrating and rattling. They (honda) makes a newer version of the CCT that they claim lasts "longer" but the design is practically the same. They just use slightly different metal, and a stiffer spring. You need to have it replaced if you want the sound to go away.
Yes I also have the exact same thing on my F4. Anoying as heck but I took it to 2 Dealerships and they both said it was normal.

I test rode a 2005 600rr yesterday, and its there even on that bike with less than 3,000 miles...I noticed it while riding i was like, wtf something wrong with the bike already, its brand new...
The guy told me its the CCT and its a noise you'll hear on any honda sportbike....

if it were to actually break (which would be REALLY hard) then your cam chain (essentially a timing belt) would become so loose that it would probably skip a tooth, and you'd probably bend a valve/ruin a piston.
However, just because you hear the noise does not mean your cam chain is loose. It's typically just the CCT rattling in itself. Read my first post in this thread for a description of the device.

It's a wear item - just replace it whenever it begins to make noise.
On another note, I would suggest getting an APE Manual CCT. The MCCT requires adjusting every year or so (more often if you ride harder), but they'll last forever. Much cheaper than OEM, as well.

thats right. just get the APE manual cam chain tensioner and follow their directions closely.
