code 12=egr valve
1991 crx hf
im throwing a code 12 and i think that also accounts for my rough idling at the moment...I was wondering do i just disconnect the vaccum hoses and removed the valve and just try to clean it or what???any help would be useful..i searched but all i got was ppl asking if they have the egr valve and i know fer sure i have it...TIA

You can try to clean it out,
but you are usually better off replacing it..
If it is hanging open,it will definantly cause a rough idle as
is basically like having a huge vacuum leak..

if your budget is low like mine i wold go ahed and clean it just use some engine cleaner u can pick it up a a prts store 4 like 3 bucks and spray the hell out of itwhat ever you do don't use a n air blower i learnd from my mistake then aftewr is all good and clean put some lubricant like wd-40 to loosen the valve thats what i did and work GREAT
stock HF?
looks like 2 nuts to remove and a couple hoses,
egr dumps engine vacuum when it open. supposed to suck in exhaust to the intake at certain load and rpm conditions. smog reduction is its primary purpose. idling problems abound when egr sticks open[like was said by 88DXCRX]
if bad -> replace.

There is a vacuum line that runs to the EGR. Suck on that line.
It should pull a vacuum and hold it and NOT leak.
If it leaks at all - even a LITTLE bit - then the diaphram in the EGR went bad.
It's rubber material so you can figure that over time it will go bad.
In a working EGR, when vacuum is pulled during normal engine operation the diaphram is sucked up. A metal rod is attached to this diaphram and it is lifted upward during this vacuum. The rod normally blocks the path for the exhaust to recirculate, but when it's lifted then the path is opened. The other end of the rod is detected by the lift sensor on the top of the EGR.
A bad diaphram causes the rod to stay down and the sensor reads no lifting. Then you get an EGR code.
So, my guess is either the rod has gunk all over it and is binding up to the point that it can no longer be lifted upward or the diaphram in the EGR has a hole in it.
