Default Drag City, So Cal's 1st professional strip in 30 years

What is left of Carlsbad

What is planned for all so cal drag racers!

"Yes, a true NHRA 1/4 mile drag strip in the city of Banning. A bit far out there, but about the same drive for us in the SGV as Palmddale, but to the east.

Spectators:
Half Track View - Looking down the track, spectators will notice that they are angled away from the drag strip. Unlike most drag strip facilities that built spectator stands that are parallel with the track at 0 degrees, Mopar Drag City's spectators stands will be offset 3 degrees to allow for the fans to have a better view of the whole race from start to the finish. Because our track will also be 23 feet below the natural grade, our seating area has been designed to take advantage of the natural 3:1 slopes to act as our superstructure for the stands. Both sides of the tracks will be limited to just 12 rows of seating for a "stadium" feel, that puts the fans closer to the action. We will have a total of 10,000 individual flip up seats with backs and cup holders. Seating past half track will be stadium style concrete for future expansion and used for extra seating for bigger super shows where seat cushions can be used. "

"The track also faces east, so you don't have the sun in your eyes in the evening (like Irwindale, or dust from the desert/motorcycles like LACR). The altitude of the track is 2100...with a correction factor of ET = .9757 MPH = 1.0255"

what rumeos...i hope your kidding....I have always had good luck at LACR....once carlsbad closed.....seemed there was no where to race. Cali Speedway is nice but.....the fact that the car has to be registerd and insured kinda suxxx for anyone trying to build up a race car...
I'll believe the DragCity....drag strip when I see it. I been on the mailing list since day 1 and still no drag strip after 6years.............................

A recent article in the Riverside Press Enterprise says it will be open by winter. I also will believe it when I see it. We've all been hearing that for years. There's thousands and thousands of acres of dirt and sand in Southern California for quads, sandrails, dirt bikes, etc. but we can't get a "REAL" drag strip to race at ever weekend. Even though Pomona was only open a handful of dates a year, I always miss it. I was/am hoping this mythical track in Banning is 1/2 as good..............

Banning drag strip back on track

Facility to include business park

Stacia Glenn, Staff Writer
San Bernardino County Sun
12/18/2005

BANNING -- After a long, bumpy ride, plans for a $10 million drag strip have finally crossed the finish line. Under an agreement approved last week with developer Banning Airport Associates LLC, the city is selling a 20-acre parcel needed for the drag strip and helping it acquire a $70 million automotive-themed business park.

It is a three-year agreement.

A new partnership has also been created to put the $10 million drag strip back on track.
Banning Airport Associates has coupled with All American Racing, which initially pushed the project and won city approval in 2001. The company held a groundbreaking ceremony in June 2003 and has since completed street repairs.
Andy Marocco, president of All American Racing, will operate the track with his father, Ron Marocco, and Banning Airport Associates is expected to build a 33-acre business park across the street.

The quarter-mile-long drag strip, dubbed Mopar Drag City after its biggest sponsor, will have its main entrance on Barbour Street near Banning Municipal Airport and is expected to cut down on illegal street racing.
It will include grandstands to seat 5,000 to 10,000 people, but Marocco said it could be expanded to 50,000 seats if the track attracted a national event.

The drag strip has been a long time in coming, but city officials say the process has been greenlighted.
"This is going to bring jobs and kick start development around the airport," said City Manager Randy Anstine.
An economic study conducted by Redlands-based economist John Husing, who studies the Inland Empire and San Gorgonio Pass, estimates the drag strip will drop about $35 million annually into the city's economy.

It will also draw millions of dollars into the city because visitors will be spending money on gas, food and lodging, said Economic-Redevelopment Director Henry Hesling.

And the city will finally have what racing fans have spent the last four years waiting for a professional National Hot Rod Association-sanctioned racing strip.

"In our opinion, Southern California hasn't had a professional drag strip built in over 38 years," Marocco said.
The last one was built in Orange County in 1967, he said. Other drag strips can be found at California Speedway in Fontana and Perris Auto Speedway.

There is no set date for construction to begin but it will only take 120 days to get the track up and running once the planning process is complete, Marocco said.

He estimates drivers will have to pay up to $25 to run a car on the track for one night.

Agreed. The "Drag City" track has been one of those things that you always hear about, but nothing ever comes of it ( like the TI re-opening thing ) I hope that it will one day open, but I am doubtful.

California Speedway's track should be opening very soon. A dedicated track with AAA and NHRA support! That's not too shabby.

LACR may not be the best track in the world, but I don't mind racing anywhere. The rumors that I have heard are a little different than most. I have heard that the track will be cut to 1/8 mile to let the excavating machines come across the backside of the track. Also, I have heard the there is a new plot of land for a new track, but the option is to reduce the length rather then re-locate!

And the old tried and true Pomona, the 5 times a year track. NHRA Powerade hits it twice a years, NHRA SC once, and I think 2 Good Guys events! Such a great facility going to waste 47 weeks a year! Thank the close neighbors in the city of La Verne for F'ing that one up....

I just saw the latest pix of Fontana and it is close to complete. It looks like they only used concrete for the first 200' or so, however. That probably means no top fuel or funny cars.
