Default Oh no! My motor 'sploded!

At least that what I thought at first. Allow me to explain.

I was on my way back from a little day trip in the R. After a very slow moving vehicle turned off the road, I though I would enjoy some v-tec. So I go WOT, and I am coming up to the redline. All of a sudden I hear this horrible "BOOM" followed by a huge plume of smoke behind me, and coming up from under the hood.

I was certain I blew my motor. I immediately shut the car off, and pulled over to the side of the road. I look under the car, and didnt see any oil. Thats a good sign. So I popped the hood and looked around. I didnt see anything at first, and was a bit confused. Then I noticed something. My crank-alt belt was missing. Looking at it some more, I notice the idler pulley was caked in burnt rubber, crooked, and had bits of metal shavings around it.

Well, at least I didn't blow my motor. This was the first major scare I had with this caR. Here are some pics:

Yeah, the 3 hour wait was not fun. Damn AAA.

As for the parts, luckily I have a spare idler pulley and belt laying around. On the down side, the lower tensioner assembly is trashed.

Typical chezzy Jackson quality pulley.
My old JRSC delsol I gave my old man as a beater 8 yrs ago always go thru
these every few years. He had to machine a quality one for longevity.

Waaaay back in the 80's I had the pleasure of using a kind of "special" car that came with two warnings on the instrument cluster.

One warning was that the car would not reach top speed in overdrive.

The other warning was to not attempt maximum acceleration with the AC turned on. Snapped the belt immediately when I forgot and did it.

Thanks, but it should be a fairly simple task once i can get the lower tensioner assembly off. It's pretty mangeled, and I think I may have to dremel the stud off. The offer is greatly appreciated though.

I am grateful it was only the belt and lower tensioner assembly. It seems the bearing in the pulley gave way, the pulley seized, the friction from the belt bent the stud holding the pulley in place and burnt the crap out of the belt until it gave way. I have a spare belt and idler pulley, but I do need to replace the entire lower assembly due to damage sustained.

Here are some pics of the culprit.

On the plus side, all damaged parts are being replaced free of charge.

Mrs. Splat's old Taurus did something similar, except that car had a serpentine belt. I thought for the world she had blown the engine. Repair was quite reasonable.

LOL. I have some difficulty on finding the "middle ground."

On a different note, while digging around the engine bay to clean up the metal shavings I found this lil guy:
