I have a stock exhaust on my 89 civic hatch. Something on the bottom is Rattling BAD! Also I dunno why but my exhaust sounds loud as hell. You would think its a very nice exhaust by the sound... but I dunno what the hell is going on.
My friend said I could have an exhaust leak causing the loud sound. Ok how do I fix that ..
and a guy at work said my Heating Shield is causing the rattling. He said I could take it off and the rattling would stop, but my car wound get hot.
What if there is a hole in my exhaust somewhere and some of the metal fell in it causing it to rattle.
I dunno.
What do yall think? Yall are the experts.

You sound a bit new so I'll walk you through this one.
First, the rattle is caused usually by either the exhaust hanger being damaged or broken, a leak, or the heat shield on your exhaust manifold. (Which is under your hood not under your car) A good way to fix rattles is to listen to where they are coming from, and then push on whatever you believe to be rattling and see if it stops, if it does, that's your problem.
The loudness of the exhaust is an exhaust leak. Often times old stock exhausts take enough abuse whether from rust, road damage, or just gaskets going bad they begin to leak. This can also cause vibration and may cause your exhaust to rattle. Either way, exhast leaks are bad and should be fixed ASAP because they rob your engine of power and will often times cause you to fail emissions, all that besides sounding trashy. In the event that it is a bad gasket somewhere along your exhaust system (there's a few of them), it's just going to need to be replaced. If it's something more than that, say a crack or even a full on hole in your system, without welding it to correct the problem, I would just recomend replacing the full exhaust system (Upgrade, and do research, there are plenty of "Which is the best exhaust" posts in this forum.)

yea I am sorta new to all this.
I have a parts car that has a fairly clean exhaust on it. Would transfering it to my car be that hard?
they are both 89 civic hatchbacks. How complex is removing the exhaust.
I bought a Haynes or Hanes book. how ever you spell it. thing sucks *****.

There are many things for the rattle, Mine is the exhaust rubbing the shifter. Your engine won't get if your heat shield is off. It's just to prevent some of the exhaust heat to go throughout the engine bay. Do what the other guy said and touch stuff, don't be stupid about it and touch something thats hot. Replacing an exhaust is one of the easiest things to do. Anyone can do it with the basic tools and little to no knowledge. Just make sure you torque everything to spec.

Not hard at all, if they are both stock exhausts they will just swap right over.
As far as the heat shields go, you can just remove those. Unless you park on grass all the time, then i wouldnt. Heat shields are the layer of metal that is on the outside of the down pipe on the exhaust. Very simple to remove, just get under the car and spend 10 seconds looking at it and you'll figure it out.

Ok ok. Gotcha. Thanks alot.
One more question.
Is it possible to .. how do I explain it.. Can I take off all my exhaust and get a custom one that comes out like behind the front wheel.
or how car can I just hacksaw the **** off and still be safe.

Yea. My buddy Kinda explained it to me.
Impressive Photoshop skills will better explain what I am talking about.
I was told you get more HP if your exhaust doesn't have to travel as far. Or something like that.
"from = front on picture"

Oh ok i see what you were saying, and yes you could do that, but imo it would be a waste of time and it would look really lame on a civic...
But where you wrote "cut" is the end of the first section of the down pipe, so you wouldnt have to saw it off there you could just un-bolt it.

If you really want to do it, it's perfectly possible and many exhaust shops could custom make it for you if you were unable, just make sure your measurements are sound so they know where to make the angles. It's not legal, and not going to make any more power, but go ahead it's your car.

Ok. Yall rock.
I went under there and shook all of it. I found the heat shield that was rattling.
After I took it off. About 50 small rocks just poured out.. little *******.
I inspected the pipe all the way down. The hole is in the main fat part of my muffler.
I took the muffler off the other car. I am gonna switch those out tomorrow to get rid of the loud noise.
I am just glad its not rattling no more. Its so embarrassing pulling up to a place and your car is rattling.
Gracias
