Default Swap questions

I just bought a 91 Civic DX hatch and I'm looking to do a cheap swap for reliability reasons. The car has a D15B2 with 160k miles and an auto tranny that's about to let go (I think). I'm considering this swap http://www.hmotorsonline.com/s...30019 with the tranny and ECU. This is where you guys who know more than me come in. What else would I need to complete the swap, like wiring harness, axles etc.? Would I run into problems with the hydro tranny? Any help would be appreciated.

Dude I did same swap in my automatic '89 CRX.

It was my first and we had little to no idea what we were doing. After a month of troubleshooting we got it working. Unfortunately, it took me drilling a new hole in my distributor to do it. At the time I didn't know about OBD0 or OBD1. Neither did I know about OBD-1 conversion harnesses only working for manual transmission SIs and HFs.

The bottom line is this: Unless you really want to spend all the money converting your car to OBD1 and getting a hydraulic tranny, just get a ZC. I damn sure wish I did. It would have been cheaper and the swap would probably have been complete in about 2 days in stead of 1 month. If you can get your hands on a ZC (very cheap), all you need is the ECU and bolts straight in.

Thanks for the info. Can anyone tell me exactly what I would have to do to convert my auto DX from obd0 to obd1? Like I said, if I get this swap I'll be getting the ECU and tranny with it and the car came with new axles.

Even if I'm going from a 91 obd0 to a 92-95 obd1?

I went OBD0 and it took me like 5 days to finish my D15B swap. It was my first time, but it went very well. Obviously, converting to OBD1 will cost much more then OBD0 because you need to purchase the OBD1 wiring harness for the motor and the ECU. Everything else should be fine.

Correct me if I’m wrong because I only worked with OBD0.

I just checked out rywire.com and saw that they offer harnesses for the DX obd0 to obd1. Should cost about $300-$350 to take care of the wiring. Now on to the fun part. What all is required for me to convert my auto to a 5-speed? I'll be needing a clutch pedal assembly, slave cylinder, and master cylinder right? Anything else?

Just buy the ZC at HMO and buy the tranny separately from HMO (give them a call first). Your distributor should work because it’s an OBD0.

Even if I get the ZC motor I'll have to convert from dpfi to mpfi so I'll have to spend about $215 on a harness and plugs for that from rywire.com correct? It seems like I'd be better off purchasing the newer engine and converting to obd1. Am I forgeting anything?

ok, what would be the advantage of doing the zc other than saving a little money on the harness and motor, and what would be the difference in the end? I will be getting the harnesses through rywire just to make it easier on myslef. Any advice on the auto to manual conversion?

You dont need a new harness for the ZC swap. You can modify your existing harness. All you will need is a resistor box and ecu. My ZC from HMO already had injector plugs on it.

Only the second link works for me and it says it only works on DXs with a manual tranny.

Here's my opinion, it's probably wrong because I know nearly nothing about obd0 or these older Civics. The D15B vtec is a little bit more expensive than the sohc ZC motor but it's also newer and has a little bit more power. I'd have to spend more on conversion harnesses and an ECU for the D15 but that's the only drawback right? A couple hundred dollars isn't going to break me and either way I go I'm going to have to get a new tranny since mine is almost dead. So if I get the d15 with everything in the link above including the ecu and tranny, then I get the conversion harnesses I'll be set. Then all I need is everything to do the auto to manual swap right? Tell me if I'm overlooking any major details. Will stock replacement motor mounts and axles work with this d15?

Thank you sir, that helps a lot. Does anyone know if the axles are different on a d15 auto and manual?

I still say sell it for an HF or an Si.

If your 99 Si is running you can afford to lose one car.

How does a dohc zc motor sound? I won't be doing the d15 vtec since I need a new tranny too and that one comes with a hydro one. The zc motor should come with a cable tranny and be obdo right? That way I only have to have the dpfi to mpfi conversion harness correct? I'm racking up on auto to manual conversion parts. Will the stock motor mounts work with this dohc zc motor? And does anyone know if the axles are different in the d15 auto than th zc 5-speed? I'm probably going to order this swap tomorrow so I need as much info as possible.

Im pretty sure the zc was around for quite a few years. just make sure that you specify that u want an obd 0 and cable tranny. The stock mounts will work. The axles I dont think will work. If i remember correctly the zc uses a half shaft like b series.
