Good luck finding pimped wagons. They exist, but they are VERY difficult to find and even fix up if you have the 4wd version. 99% of the standard parts do not fit, there are no body kits/mods sold for it, and interior upgrades are virtually impossible without destroying OEM parts. I looked into purchasing one for myself, but my hatch fell into my lap at the last minute. The EF-based models are sweet, if you get one, take care of it as it might be worth money sometime down the road.

Well... EF, meaning generation based on JDM VIN, is the 88-91 Civic/CRX generation. Most people believe that this was the pinnacle of refinement in the Civic generation. They continued to get heavier and this was also the first generation that came with Vtec as an option in higher end models and was the last generation of the real racing CRX and the wagon models (the del Sol does not count, it was badged a CRX outside the US, but it only looked the part halfway and performed terribly). Most US and Canadian variants of this generation are technicallty "ED"s but most identify them with the JDM EF. My opinion (and some will disagree, as with any opinion) is the 88 Hatch Std was the best model due to the excessively light weight and the ability to use pre-EF generation motors and interior parts as well as post-EF generation motors and basically everything else. Some of the best upgrades you can do to the EF generation come from the 94-2001 Integra with the center console including cup holders and arm rest (neither of which came on any EF model). Search around, you will notice those that drive this generation Civic/CRX are VERY devoted to the EF and look down on most other models (of Civics) as half-assed tries to copy the original power to weight ratio of the EF models (I do and I think that anything afterwards with few exceptions are heavy pigs, EG lovers this does not include you).

I am very biased, of course, and I love my beater "ED" very much. Good luck and happy hunting with your wagon!

FYI...
The 4wd wagon is very difficult to swap and make changes with as it was the only model until recently that came with 4wd at all making parts difficult to come by, and expensive to modify.

Difficult? I'll give you "different"...but not "difficult".
If you want to keep the 4wd, you can put in pretty much any of the D-series motors.
They swap in like any other Civic/CRX. The only difference is in the tranny.
And who is going to modify the actual 4wd system anyway?

Maybe I should ask what 'pimped out' means. Me personally, I have avoided the ridiculous mods but lets face it I'm sure theres someone out there rockin a Black Widow kit with no shame, just not me....

I disagree, like anything you are only limited to $$$$

If you are referring to the 84-87 wagons, you can swap the brown top dohc zc.
or turbo it, I never had one but if the opportunity presents itself I may. There are many here who have modded the 84-87 very well here on H-T.

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1255972

there is a guy in the thread & @ redpepperracing.com who has a turbo 84-87 EW wagon. (sorry but the pics a re down & not my fault )
B swaps are possible also for the 2wd and 4wd ??? haven't seen it

If you are referrring to the 88-91 wagon I'll lift the last response I gave on this thread
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1340602

Since you didn't specify which wagon you have I will assume you have a 2wd civic wagon and not the rt4wd.

D series motors from later models and the jdm market like the dohc zc & sohc zc will swap in easiest 2wd & 4wd

B series motors are a common swap since its ~ swappin into any 4th gen
for 2wd, 4wd ????

H & F series can be done but its alot more difficult judging from whats been posted here on H-T BUT its not impossible. 2wd same as 4th gen swap hint: search 2point2
4wd ??????

K series is the swap of choice if you're bankin, this swap may soon replace the b swap at some point since the introduction of so many swap friendly kits. I'm sure more will follow. This one may be the most expensive of all Honda motors currently due to its recent introduction but as more motors become available the prices may lower. Again same as 4th gen installation, search K series. The 2wd is A++ for this swap option but 4wd is definately uncharted territory to my knowledge.

v6 *shrugs* .....

body kit, jdm & don't ask me where to get this, I dunno either

nice modded wagon, these are the NJ guys

The interchange IMO is better than the 1% balance you've implied. The interior is not a complete hack but is a little difficult.... I went to a Teg cluster and a CRX dashboard.

I think the whole 4th gen lineup is something that will be considered a generation to remember. It is approaching 20 years( in about 2 years, less in Japan) since Honda introduced this series. I am still fascinated with the hatch, 4dr and Crx.

The 4wd system as Davens pointed out is definately not as difficult to swap if you stay D series. Its just a rarer model that many may not understand and fewer have swapped or modded.

I will try to find some but alot of them have ended up red X's over time but as a suggestion try searching all major search engines for "shuttle" "beagle" "honda" "civic" "wagon"
be ready to use alta vista/babelfish to translate as well.
I have found quite a bit of information from Japan and Germany.

Use these in different combinations...In the meantime I'm sure there are others who are willing to contribute some more info

AND thanks to Gutterslide, he has done an extensive job archiving alot of the wagon pics, some used throughout this post and others. He is more meticulous about these images than I am. He would be a great reference for those images as well.

Anything this old with only 59k is going to command a premium. Do a Carfax and see if there is any indication of odometer rollback...sneaky, underhanded dealers.

There is some bounce in the 88-91 Civics value that isn't reflected in most car valuation sources(Blue book, NADA etc). Good, clean, low mile examples are commanding significantly more then what they are officially worth. If I was in the market, I wouldn't bat an eye at paying $5k for an EF with low miles and mint interior/exterior.

which person was that & send me a link to the thread...I'll see if I can find you an answer

Right now there are 3 active boards, & 2 message boards. http://www.hondacivicwagon.com is now a Webring. Its a portal to 5 different wagon message boards. I figured it would be the best way to bring everyone looking for civic wagon information together. We are looking into consolidating 3 of the boards into one main resource but thats another issue...
