Default Strut Bar Question

I've noticed that some strut bars go directly over the shocks in the engine bay, and some strut bars require some drilling right next to the shocks in the engine bay to install. How exactly do strut bars work, and what is the difference between the two types?

Sorry if this is a noob question.

the mounting points would make little difference in the overall efficacy of a strut bar, mostly because they don't do dick in the first place.

not sure what you mean by directly over the shocks--however, mounting something that is supposed to brace the chassis on the shocks in a double a-arm suspension is a little disturbing, as the shocks are not loaded in a double-a arm suspension and the bar is supposedly exerting a force on the tops of the shocks.

anyway, i don't think it really matters either way.
