LEXAN GLASS OR HOME MADE HOME DEPOT PLEXI?
sup all, just wanted to get some ideas... anyone ever try using some plexi glass instead of lexan glass windows? just want to know if anyone has tried doing this, since it would save a huge amount of money. post some pics!
you cant use that ****, plexiglass does NOT flex, and it will break when you try to flex it. + it scratches real easy
you want a "cheaper way out" check out mr-10 lexan from GE

ok i called a place called tap plastics and they sell lexan glass... if i were to get the glass and have them cut it out for me.... how would i go about puting them on? with rivets? screws? any ideas? pics would be coo if u gottem. good lookin out!
click the link in my signiture. on both of our cars we used stainless allen-head bolts, with lock nuts on the backside. just put the window up in the "frame" and drill all the holes out. you will have to measure before you drill, just make sure that you can get enough of the lip, as well as still fit the small nut on the backside.
or if you want to go the easy route, pop rivets still do the job. but can crack the lexan when installing.
as for painting the windows, i simply took a small piece of sheet metal, and bent it into a L shape in a vise.... on the long side of the L i cut a < shape in it, so you can use that as a "guide" to make the edge of where the glass needed to be taped to, run around the edges with the small part of the L hangin off and the tall part of the L laying on the part where you are marking.
the long side of the "guide" should look something like _____/\_____/\___ depending on where you make the "cuts" will determin how wide the black paint will be on the window. also, i recomend putting black tape on the back of the window after its painted, so the paint wont be scratched so easily.

what i did was just used the lexan that home depot sells...they sell plexi glass and lexan...(but i put the sticker from the plexi glass on the lexan to save a couple bucks..shhhhhhhhh)...but it came out real nice and it doesnt stratch as easy either
allmotor... got any pics? what did u use to hold the lexan in? and as for weather stripping, do u put that in to keep water from coming in as well?
Some thing that i have beenthinking about is this. The FAL molded window kits dont require any screws or rivits. They come with a prep and some kinda super strong epoxy type stuff. So when your done they look pretty stock. I want to make my own with homedepot lexan because its alot cheeper. But i dont wanna use screws because i want the windows to look stock at a glance. I am worried if i try to glue a home made lexan in it will pop at the cornors because its not molded. I guess i could just paint the screw heads black. Any one try gluing a home made lexan piece in?
take some advice from me,
i went the cheap route and bought some plexi-glass at homedepot, and used it on my old project car.... it was very hard to mount, went to drill the screws in and it cracked... so i had to drill pilot holes then set the screws in later.
after that it was fine,
then i parked the car in the garage, moved it outside, garage, outside... the vibration of either me racing the car (twice) or starting it up, open header, and moving it 5 feet, and the windows started to crack.
also when they side outside, they turn yellowish and become very brittle.
the home depot windows scratch very easily.
maybe it was me..... (since i never installed these before)
maybe it was the materials, but next time im buying prefabbed lexan windows.

i wasnt really bitching i was saying that when i do it again, i would use lexan. i know i went the cheaper route, and i would decide against it next time.
you have some nerve getting all pissed and telling people to go back and read.

na sorry no pics i dont have the car any more but i didnt know this was a street car...this was for a track only so i didnt put the weather stuff back in and i used rivots to hold in the lexan
o nah its a full race car, but i figure when u wash it, i just dont want the water all up inside you feel? or i didnt know if youre suppose to have it on or off to keep it from vibrating against metal. that was the reason.
these are the FAL "street"(pre-formed) civic windows on the coupe. we didnt paint the black on the back windows, but we did paint the black on the front and 2 door windows.

this is my hatch, these windows are the FAL "race" windows, which are not pre-formed or painted, these needed to be trimmed a bit, and i also had to paint the black around the edges

both cars use stainless allen head bolts with lock nuts on the backside.

on the coupe, the 3 rear windows are the "street" version, the 2 door windows and the front are cut out from a sheet of lexan. i belive it was percy's speed glass (not 100% sure) yes, both the hatch and coupe have fiberglass doors.
