Turbo made great power, but then as you can see. The shaft on the cold side SNAPPED causing the damage.

Turbo was sent to precision and we didn't feel we were treated fairly. (I want to see what your opinion is and then I will post up how precision treated us)

 

motor, setup, power levels, boost levels, what rpm were you turning the motor to? etc.

overspeeding a turbo or throwing excessive thrust load at a turbo can cause shafts to snap. or it could have been a defect in the shaft material

 

wow. That looks violent. Sorry to see that. precision turbo's gain shaft play kinda quick, but I never heard of one snapping. Good luck.

Damn, that's one #uck-up turbo. Hope it did not do any damage to your engine. Try sell that thing on Ebay.

 

If there were no filter then its your fault...but if thats not the case then another possiblity would be the shaft flexed alittle due to heavy load from downshifting possibly, and after it made contact... the shaft was $ucked. I doubt the shaft just snapped.

but, then again if you exceeded the limits of its rotational balance then it is again...your fault.

nothing breaks with out reason...its all about who did it...you...god...manufacturer.

so what was the setup, psi, situation, how many miles with this setup.

what are some specs on the setup?

 

Oil supply/drain, HP level and inlet protection would be three things I would be asking about if I worked at Precision.

I almost would guarantee that it will. They can't help it if you don't run a filter and something gets in there and destroys a perfect turbo. I would say if it was from a foreign object, you are **** out of luck.

 

but a foreign object wouldn't touch the shaft,
and the shaft is what broke

I mean I guess you could say that the object coulda hit the blades, causing force to break the shaft..

but in my mind, i'd expect the blades to just get chipped up/broken/cracked before the shaft would just snap like that...

 

I'm sure there is a good bit of rotational inertia stored up in a turbine wheel rotating at 100k+ RPM. If a foreign object managed to damage the wheel enough to cause it to seize, there might be enough energy stored up in the turbine wheel to shear off the shaft, especially at elevated temperatures where the shafts shear strength is much lower.

 

how long did you have the turbo?....hopefully its not a year yet....because when my sc61 shaft lock up on me,id called sam @ precision turbo(head guy of repair @ precision turbo)and he told me that if its a manufactor defect then they'll fix it at no cost but you pay for shipping...on the other hand,if its your fault then you'll have to pay for it,if you want...he'll inspect it for free and give you a estimate cost of parts and labor...so hopefully its not a year yet and not your fault...so good luck!!!

 

oh,and i forgot that precision only warranty a manufactor defect turbo for a year...thats it...

 

It was a month old or less. He and I got ours around the same time and the same batch.

A customer of mine went through 3 GT40/67s and we didnt know what was going on. They got feed up and they primed the car with out the turbo on and NO OIL CAME OUT OF THE LINE!!!! And guess what? The shaft snapped too. The only reason it would snap is because there is no oil in it and it heats up and make the shaft very weak. A piece of metal doesnt just snap for no reason.

I would check your oil line.

precision 24x10.5x3.5 core with custom end tanks
Custom (home made) ram horn manifold
3" downpipe with 3" full exhaust

Car was running 24 pounds of boost.
Car dynoed 550 hp / mid 400 torque

The precision SC61 was put thru 15 passes on the dyno
and ran at 3 drag events.

oil feed :
3 an oil line up top
with a -10 oil return on the bottom

As far as something going in there and snapping the shaft. I highly doubt it. We've meshed all our turbos (even on street cars) and nothing has messed up one turbo yet.

Car went for it's first qualifying run of the day. We warmed the car up in the pits. Made sure the AEM's 2 step worked along with checked all fluids/oil... Got out to the burnout box with it. And BAM. the car just fell on it's face. Would barely run and barely did a burnout so it limped down the track and back in the pits we found the broken shaft.

The oil feed system worked vey well, because we had to run back to the shop... Grab a spare turbo and slap her on there. When taking off the old turbo. Lots of oil came out of the center section.

Luckly nothing seemed to get in the motor. The precision IC caught most of it. But we had to blow and tap the IC against the wood on the trailer to get a ton of metal chunks out of it.

Car on the backup turbo ran a 10.90 that day. (turned down the boost and just just added a fuel percentage to the AEM to finish the day)


Like I said in the post above. The turbo was meshed, and after the incident, we got back to the shop and inspected the turbo and there were ZERO foreign materials in it.

Opened the cold side compressor housing and saw that the shaft just snapped. Put it back on, and sent it to precision... Thinking they'd take care of it, but nope. Had to pay WAY MORE than just shipping.
