Tranny=F***ed Was gonna replace Axle Seal and found chucks of metal. LS motor civic
Well it started out as a normal job, i have done this a couple times(replacing axle seal) I go to jack it up and i see a little bit of tranny fluid, im like ok, probly the seal came all the way out this time. i go in the garage and get some cardboard to catch the oil. While im slipping under to lay it down, i look at the seal and inspect it to see how it failed this time, and i notice a chunk of metal in there, so i pull it out, run my finger around the inner part of the tranny and there is another piece.
Im pretty sure its my Differential on my B16 tranny. Last time this happened when i replaced the seal i noticed a little chunk of the axle missing last time [IMG
NOw i can only amagin that two more lobes or what ever you want to call them are missing.
HOw hard is it to fix, replacing the diff? i am pretty good at working on my motor, i have never worked on a tranny before though.
p.s. anyone have a Diff for me?

oh... So, one of the four diff gaurds broke off... I think the same thing happend on my d-series trans before my swap. I drove it like that forever, no leaks, no problems... never found the missing peices though.

Now you said you have done engine work but not trans work. I would say go for it as long as you are mechanically inclined, use common sense and scoop a factory service manual. I haven't opened the cover of a helms or chilton in years so I don't know if they go it to the detail required for this work. All I do know is about 5 Chilton manuals stacked up is just a little thicker than my FSM.. Tranny work is a whole different deamon, disassembly/assembly has to be done to perfection otherwise you might as well have just bought another trans.. Good luck either way though..

I generally leave tranny work to a professional. It is much different than working on a motor.

to me rebuilding a tranny is way easier then building a motor. You can mess way more stuff up in the motor. You have to measure everything out, calculate. Plus it takes way way way more time to build a motor right.
Tranny can be done in matter of hours, especially if you done it before. You only got to check the out of round on the shafts, inspect the bearings, gear selectors synchros and you are done. Tranny can be done by anybody who got some common sence and doesn't have hands growing out of the wrong places.

I like how you put this, the key is the common sense. Had a discussion the other day how society in general seems to be lacking this key survival tool. Oh but you forgot to mention you also need to be able to read, so you re-assemble in the right order..
$150 is a bet though, definitely better than trying to learn something new, in a sense..

I should show you the other pieces i found, i wasnt even beating on the car that day when they broke, was maybe doing 35 tops, for about 4 miles. But it may have happened the day before or something. who knows, but now my problems should be ok, i have a manual jack shaft, new seal, and a newer diff on the way. so i should be problem free for a little bit.
Tranny work is easy. You just put everything back the way you took it off. Broken stuff in the diff is bad. The diff pin in mine broke, spun around and put a hole in the bell housing. The hole is on the left side of where the diff goes. If you have done motor work before then you can do tranny work.

If your gonna do tranny work make sure to get a tube of Honda-Bond since there are no gaskets in there between the parts of the housing..
make sure you really clean it up all around it. It would really suck if you put the tranny back up, just to find out that bitch is leaking.

Hte $150 dosent sound to bad IF hes taking the trans out too, To replace the differental is fairly easy with tools you have at home.
I would put a LS Diff in there if you can while its all apart, I dont remember if you have on in there now but it would be the time to upgrade that.
If you want to do it yourself you can do so pretty easily hit me up and I'll walk you thro it. Shouldent take you more then a few hours because I assume your gonna take your time to do it right since you've never done it before.
If your gonna do it yourself get a tube of hondabond or "the righst stuff" there the same thing I belive but havent tried the second, it was recomended to me by the dealership but I think it was in part because the guy was to lazy to order me the tube
so I called anther one farther away and they ordered me one no prop and delivered it free.
