finally!!! (new bike thread)
It's an 03 r1 with 5800 miles. Limited edition black with red flames and a devil carbon fiber high mount exh. It has a few scratches from being dropped at low speed or stand still, but I'm not complaining. I've rode it a couple of hours everyday since I got it. This is my first bike and i love it. Flame if you must for getting an r1 as a first bike, but I am pretty comfortable with it. You just have to respect it untill you get use to it. I have ridden dirtbikes most of my life and I always wanted a road bike, so I am pretty stoked as I'm sure most of you were with your first one. anyway, here's a pic.

I'll throw up a better pic when imagestation is up

I will definitely take this opportunnity to flame you for getting an R1 as a first bike.I don't care if you "think" you're comfortable on it.The bike will throw you off.So consider yourself flamed.lol But seriously man, good luck and I do hope you're safe out there.WEAR YOUR GEAR!

Congrats man, normally I am right there on the flame bandwagon for buying liter bikes as the first one...... BUT, I have ridden motocross for a long time and I for one know that you are more likely to get thrown off a CRF 450 or a high strung CR250 than you are an R1 so if you have experience on things like that, you already know how to keep your ego in check.
Congrats on the new ride and watch out for the other idiots who want to run into you.

I don't buy into the "starter bike" theory. It doesn't matter if I have a bike with 300hp....it doesn't mean I have to use it.
A similar analogy: You can put a gallon of whiskey in my hand, and a gallon in the hand of an alcoholic. I will mix up a drink or take a few sips of it, whereas the alcoholic will likely drink until he's sick, passed out, or the bottle's empty.
It's all about control. There's idiots out there that don't have the intelligence to understand that they have more power than experience, so they try to use all the power and get killed or hurt. Likewise, there's intelligent people that know they have more power than experience...so they only use the amount of power they can control with their limited experience.
Any of you "starter bike" preachers start out with your first car being a Yugo because you didn't think you could handle a v6 or v8?
BTW..nice bike, nice pipe, and a great price!!

any bike can be a starter bike.
ppl told me that i was dumb for gettin my f4i as a first bike... its all about the person. u could kill urself just as easy on a 250 as u can on that r1.
good luck with it, nice bike.

exactly. It all depends on the person. If u have some knowlege about bikes and previous experience, I see no problem with a 1k cc bike (taking into consideration how your gonna ride it). some1 that has never ridden a street or dirtbike on the other hand, thats different. if you wanna ride ***** to the wall, dont get a 1k for ur first bike. I was looking at 600rr's be4 I bought the r1. The r1 was a good deal and I knew I would wanna move up from a 600 in a short time. The r1 has more power than I will ever use. Don't get me wrong though. Lets say if I had a son and he wanted a 1000cc bike, I would nix that idea. I completely understand the risk of having it. More power on tap is gonna get you in trouble alot easier. Just ride them sensible. I invited the flames so keep em comin.
My two reasons not to get a liter bike as your first street bike:
- They're not as forgiving. It's not about keeping your wrist under control, a liter bike simply doesn't forgive rider errors like a smaller bike does.
- Because of the extra power you won't learn as fast as on a less powerful bike.

My thoughts exactly. A rider can have level head and ride safe blah blah blah. Everybody makes mistakes, a mistake on a liter bike??
About the 2nd point above, I agree with that too, having my SV really helped with this (slow bike compared to I4's, especially on big tracks). Having less power teaches you how to carry more cornerspeed and have better/higher exit speed, instead of just relying on the raw power of the bike to make up for you lack of skills.
Not really trying to flame anybody, just agreeing with somebody else's point. 01-03 R1's are damn sexy though, best looking years IMO.

i'm not gonna flame you for getting that bike as your first bike, because i'm jealous...those bikes are amazing pieces of machine.
however, if you wreck that bike...i could care less of your safety because you deserve it, but i will pray for that bikes well being and that ir survives. It's too pretty to mess up in the hands of the amateur. I've been riding dirtbikes all my life and i'm still petrified of that bike, lol
g'luck

Nice buy, one of the best looking bikes ever.
Just beware of the the disillusion of speed on these, especially with a 1k bike. That's where the problem of these come in, up to 90-100 or so, a 600 will get you in just as much trouble. After 100 the 1k will still pull like a freight train all the way to death. On the streets, you just can't react fast enough if you are working a 1k bike to potential.
Sounds like you have pretty good melon, keep it that way.
