hx engine question
this might be covered a million times. but i did search and only found "d16 for sale" "hx rims" etc.. so i figured i will just create a new post.
ok i might get a free 2000 hx engine.. d16 non-vtec
so my question is..if i can use my stock 88 civic mounts or stock hx mounts to put the d16 (hydro tranny) on my 88 civic hb std?
thanks.

i might get everything from the hx. like ecu, hydro tranny, mounts it's like a complete swap. im just wondering if i can like swap everything from the HX to my 88 civic HB STD. to bolt-in the d16 in my hatch.
i heard you can't use the hydro tranny on my hatch std? is this true? is there a way to mount the HX tranny on my 88 hb std? cause i want to know if i can use it. cause mine right now is a 4speed and i dont want to put in the d16 and run a 4speed.
thanks.

hey try your search with the words FAQ in em. your car has a cable trans setup. you want to put the hydro trans setup in? a few people above me already said to convert your cable setup to hydro in your chasis. Try to look 4 a d16 cable trans to mate on that motor.
hey to be a little more helpful; i found this site on goole:

based on my brief through that post, for a d16 you'll need a 88-91 civic/crx SI trans. I'm only assuming based on what i just read, if its true then you should be good. In my past I've interchanged z6 and y8 parts without any major problems. try to confirm what i said above in regards to the si tranny!

It should be noted that the HX engine is an VTEC-E variant...it shares a common block/head design with the d16y8. It's very similar to the 93-95 VX engine(D15z1) in function and performance. It's an engine geared towards gas milage, so it's hydro tranny prolly has some horridly long gears.
Just lettin you know before you get dissapointed.

The only thing that you can use without alot of custom work is the motor. Bolt it to a Si cable tranny and do a search for how to convert the car to MPFI.

I would have to disagree with this statement. Though they may share the same purpose in the lineup, the HX motor is far superior to the VX. The HX motor has unrealized potential, while the VX motor has no performance potential. I'm speaking most specifically of the HX's roller rockers, but there are other factors.
My friend works in a dyno shop which requires him to commute from AZ to Los Angeles. For a short time, he was driving a salvaged EG (now RIP) in which he swapped in the HX motor running on an AEM EMS tuned for power under heavy load and economy at cruise. He was able to lean out the cruise mixture a great deal more than the stock tune. He also slightly exceeded the max power output of my OBD1 SOHC ZC (vtec) (D16Z6 equivalent) that I still have in my EG. At the peak, he was beating me by about 3 hp, but at other points in the power curve he was beating me by as much as 12hp.
His car had a generic ram air intake and a 2.25 diameter exhaust, while my car had a AEM CAI and a 2.25 diameter exhaust with the same Magnaflow straight through muffler. My car should have been superior in every respect except that he had an AEM EMS while I was running a stock OBD1 Vtec ECU.
In other words, HX motor plus EMS plus a good tune >! D16Z6. Now just imagine if you ran the wildest cam that those roller rockers will allow and did some headwork. Needless to say, I'm looking for an HX head and ECU to do a mini me in my EF. Will trade for an OBD0 ZC head.

The VX engine also used roller rockers...and if i'm not mistaken so did the HF engines in the CRX's. Not to be a stickler or anything. It's simply a way to cut down on friction and we all know what that does for us. I am impressed with the HX dyno story you told, it's not surprising tho considering that the D16Y5 uses the same head casting as a Y8. Just goes to show how restricted/conservatively the engines are tuned from the factory.
