someone please help, I have the exact same problem w/ my 96 hx. everything is connected, firing order is correct, ive even tried adjusting the cam timing 1 tooth at a time in each direction w/ no luck. car will crank fine and sputter once in a while but never start! I had always thought it was a timing issue but now I'm wondering if it is something else???

you say you have fuel, spark, and compression. well hate to say it, but you dont have 1 or more of those things. if you did, it would start.

tell me how you know you have fuel, spark, and compression and i will guide you from there..

One more thing, there is a sensor of some type on the driver side on the back of the intake mani that gets very hot for some reason. A vacume line runs from the intake mani to the sensor then into the charcole canister. I have no idea what the hell it is and it doesnt seem to be very important as it runs into the charcole canister but I'm guessing it's broken simply based on the fact that it gets absurdly hot right by the plug and the car isnt even on. Sorry I don't have a pic of it.

Well compression simply based on the fact that the motor doesn't spin out of control and it sounds like it has compression, I havent busted out a gauge yet though. Spark cause I grounded the wires with a screwdriver and watched the spark bridge and fuel because the plugs are wet.

EDIT : Oh and there are no cels thrown while cranking.

check your ground wires, it wont start without them (most of the time).

one on the valve cover, one on the tranny, and one on the themrmostat housing.

Don't have one on the valve cover but there is one on the ps pump assembly. There never was one on the valve cover and there isn't one on the thermo housing on either my car or my friends.

same here, none on the thermo housing, but there's one on the tranny & valve cover.

I also have fuel spark & compression. I pulled each plug wire out & turned the key and all 4 sparked. I can smell a little bit of fuel after I try to start it for a while. And there is compression because if I turn it by hand it gets easier, then harder etc.

Ok well after much cranking the engine finnally sputtered and smoked to life. My guess is that there was just a ton of brake cleaner/degreaser/water in the intake mani and on top of the pistons based on the smoke. But the car runs fine, thanks for the help. Now time to get the DSM back on the road =/. Good luck teal_dx.

Don't ask me lol. It's just my POS daily driver. This is the first time I have ever worked on that car. I usually don't care what happens to it but I didn't want to blow it up so I figured I should atleast fix the head gasket.
