identifying vtec
hi guys,
just wondering, how to tell the difference when looking at the engine between the dx and the si (usdm ex)?
i suppose we can tell from the vtec head, but i've never seen one. anyone got a image for it?
thanks

There will be a little green solenoid on the back left part of the head.
No solenoid = no vtec.
Also, like mentioned above, look at the engine code. What year is the motor? Could be a z6 or y8

wow thanks guys for the pics and info.
lol...yea i got 00 sir and i haven't really fooled around with it a lot.
but my friend got a 98 supposedly dx(no sunroof) but it does have vtec controller and it does have a vtec sound vaguely around 5500.
he doesn't know anything about it either as he just bought it second hand.
sorry, what does vtec solenoid do? and anyone got a pic of what vtec head looks like?
ps: the vin starts with EJ6, and isn't this the same for both si and dx?

So your saying you have an SiR but don't know what vtec is pretty much?
Let me ask you this:
<U>NOTE: If you answere a question "yes" keep reading, if "no" STOP.</U>
1) have you ever popped the hood?
2) do you know what a valve cover is?
3) do you know how to read?
4) does the valve cover say VTEC?
5) you have VTEC.

oh i do know a little bit about vtec.
i was just curious about how all the little parts work for vtec to work. and i believe, the vtec head for the sir is under the cover isn't it?
and i thought since the si doesn't have that cover, i don't know how the "vtec head" would look like.
sorry i've never really seen all the engine parts yet.
ps: oh LSEGHATCH i meant usdm ex (canadian si)

u don't no what a head is? it sits ontop of the block, its what seals off the top of the block to create the compression from the pistons, where the intake goes in and exhast comes out, and its visible on all cars cept new ones with that fancy plastiv cover with the manufacture's name on it, but i mean come on u gotta no what a head is.

i read them, but i'm still confused which part exacly is the "head".
and is it visible on sohc cars?</TD></TR></TABLE>
Wow... Okay, the head is basically the "top" part of the engine. It is where the cams, valves, valve springs, retainers, (sometimes rocker arms and pushrods
) are located. The function of the head is to... **** it, I can't explain it very well. It's more complicated than weather it has VTEC or not, there are a million different things to be known about engine heads.

CLIFF NOTES: The head is the top part of your SiR engine that you can see "DOHC VTEC" written on. Thats actually the valve cover, but... Dammit, there I go again.

its when a young man, or woman reaches a stage in thier life where they discover new "fascinations" or "hobbies". it is in thier choice or not whether they will abuse the privilage of "vtec" or they will grow to respect it. there are some cases where "vtec" is mistreated or abused, which is when owners are very irrresponsible and don't maintain loyalty or respect for what they have. but there are brighter sides to the story, many owners are proud of thier "vtec" and often flaunt it. others may keep thier "vtec" hidden, maybe they are embarrased or maybe they are shy about how small thier "vtec" may be. either way "vtec" is a very enjoyable item to have, just remember to respect your "vtec" and always wear a smile
this guys probably from some mustang forum trying to make everybody look stupid.. i for one have no clue what hes talking about, sir sohc wtf? how do you know its sohc if you dont know what a head is???

You fucktard, not all vtec motors have 'VTEC' written on the valve cover. And his, being a d16y8 ('00 Canadian SiR) does NOT say vtec written on the valve cover. However, his motor is vtackalicious.

Variable-Timing & lift, Electronically Controlled: This is Honda's term for their technology that adjusts the amount that intake/exhaust valves are opened based on the current engine speed. The Insight uses a variation of the VTEC system that Honda calls VTEC-E ("E" standing for efficiency), that operates only on the intake valves.

if it's SOHC you can also tell by the location of spark plugs if it's vtec or not, if the spark plugs are on the side toward the firewall then i'ts a DX meaning it's non vtec, if the spark plugs are on the side lookin towards your radiator then it's EX meaning it's a VTEC engine hope this helps

Really you idiot it wouldn't say "vtech" because "vtech" does not exist on any Honda motor, so don't go rambling on about vtec when really you know as much as the person you are talkin **** on.
