Default painting moldings

a few questions for those of you who have done this.... i have a white 91 rex

a)how do you get the moldings off without messing them up? whats the best way?

b)what type of paint (brands, category, etc) is best?

c)do you sand them before or just paint them (do you wetsand after a few coates?)?

any info would be appreciated

Im totally not sure, but ive done a couple of paints
for the type of pain, the best i think iz to use urathane paint. not only for the clear coat but for the colors as well. but even before doing this, yes, its a good idea to strip the old coat of color off first if possible, then sand it from #200 down all the way to #1500 or more in order. then spray a undercoat, a primer waz it called? and make sure all the rust iz off az well, since spray aint gonna stick well on rust. when the undercoat is dried, then you must sand it again using #1500 and up, after that comes the color spray. do it in i think.. waz it two or three times? not all in once. after done with the color urathane spray, you must sand again with #1500 and up. after that comes the clear urathane coat. after done with clear, use #1500 and up again or really small compound wax. and htat should do alteast thats how ive been doing. the real pros put the whole car in an oven after the spray, since for some reason, the urathane doesnt strip off easily when its heated up. well, we dont have access to that so i guess we cant do that. (you can do it with small parts using your home oven ) okz, thats all i know.

You don't have to remove the molding, it just needs to be scuffed and masked off.I would consult a local paint store for all products needed and suggestions on the job.You need to use a scuff pad (grey not sure what grit) or wet sand 500 grit .Masking tape(from a paint store) and a thick paper to cover a 6 to 12 inch area above and below the molding.( Depending on how messy you are!)Use the tape right next to the molding to insure no seeping off the molding on to the cars paint.Check your door jam for a paint code and go to the paint store, then try to find the closest color, if you can't get the original.I would recommend using a trim paint if you're doing it your self. But first and for most I recommend you go to a proffesional and have the work done.Hope this helps

find a local shop that scans paint...take your gas cap off and give it
to them this way its a 100%match..

dont take them off, just mask around area.(be neat)

scuff them with sandpaper.....

use platic, 'flexible' primer... 1 coat....
light sand with a VERY fine sandpaper to get fid of
dust or anythig else that might get stuck in the primer surface..

clean with rag..

paint.. 1 coat

clear coat.! 1 coat

mine came out nice! hth

yo, 1 coat, but each coat must not be done at one try. do it in intervals, like 3 times. anyway, i think i explained it pretty good on my first response.
