Default strange idle problem

heres the deal. sometimes after driving on the interstate, my engine at idle will surge from 800-1200 rpms. Sometimes it will...sometimes it wont. it seems that it mostly does it at night when it is cooler. What could be the cause of this? My head just got rebuilt, hondata itm gasket, new honda oe head gasket. JDM h22a. Anyone ever had this happen?

happens all the time....don't worry about it. Might be a small vacuum leak somewhere - its nothing though - shouldn't affect your performance at all. Do a search, there are many people with the same problem. Most will have some solutions - me personally, I don't care about it - sure it gets annoying after a while, but oh well.

Try to find the source of your vacuum leak. Spray a fine mist of water/carb cleaner/whatever over your vacuum hoses until you hear the motor sputter. Then feel around with your hand for the actual location of the leak.

but if it was a vaccum leak, wouldnt it do it all the time? I feel retarded pulling up to a red light or stop sign and my car idles all funky. If i feather in my clutch i can make it stop. That is why i dont think it is just a vaccum leak problem. I had this before and after my head rebuild.

Im not sure if it applies to our cars or not but my girlfriends 91 celica had a horrible bouncing idle that was from a rutsy ground by the injector box. Sometimes it did it sometime it wouln't, just an idea

doesnt sounds too irratic like my problem but my car would constantly bounce idle up and down and it was most definately the iac motor. might not be the same for your car cuz mine did it everytime, just sometimes would be worse than others especially if it was cold. so maybe look into that. i dunno.

good luck

I haven't had this problem but I've heard of people with these symptoms. With some (about half) they cleaned out the ?????? valve on the intake (I can't remember the name - help anybody?)

This might help - read the second post.

i have cleaned everything i can think of on the intake manifold. I dont understand why i can feather the clutch and make it stop. anyone ever ran across this? It really only does it when it is colder outside. like at night and stuff. i dont know about winter. it just started it really.

my car does it occationally -- clean the iacv the thing on front of the throttle body if that does not do it then maybe adjust the idle screw on top--- it is easy to get a honda a little out of spec and get an idle surge

ok, so heres and update. Today on the drive to work, it was about 95degrees and the humity was around 85% humidityor so. Idled fine the entire day. Then coming home tonight, it is about 74degrees and about 55% humidity and the car started surging idle. It seems to want to do it more when coming off of the interstate and running it at night. Any help?

ok, the iacv has been cleaned. As far as the idle screw...i will check that. But there has to be some reason why it only does it at night when it is cooler outside.

I had the exact same problem and it was a vacuum leak but I also read that people had this problem because of the FITV if you do a search it will come up and how they fixed it.

But like I said I had the same problem and it was a vacuum leak that I fixed just two days ago. I did hear about a way to see you have a vacuum leak. Light an incense and slowly wave it over your intake manifold and you will be able to see when the smoke is sucked into the intake manifold showing you exactly where the leak is.

i've had the same problem and found out it was my fast idle control. the fast idle control is located under your throttle body and if you take the fast idle control off you can open one side of the Fast idle control and make sure the white plastic thing inside is tight. i've had that come apart and it messed up my idle. i hope this helps.

ok, here is what i have noticed. Last night it was doing its surging idle(as usual). Then i thought of something. I parked in the parking lot and turned off my headlights and it stopped. Then i turned them back on and it started again. Turned them off and then stopped again...WTF!!! LOL

check the voltage at the battery with the car off lights off, with the car off lights on, with the engine running lights off and with the engine running lights on and post your results.

What does the idle do if you unplug the IAC? If you adjust the base idle with the idle set screw on the throttle body, then the IAC may be able to take it from there. The helm has a procedure for setting the idle... Also, a bad PCV valve will do the same thing as a vaccum leak.

If i turn off all the lights, it is fine. Parking lights will start the idling problem. All of them off and nothing happens. How odd is this?

why do you say the map sensor is bad? why would that cause the idle to be strange...mainly when the lights are on?

I'm clueless as to why you won't get a voltmeter on it and find out if something is grounding out or if you have a weak battery or charging circuit. Go back to my original post and perform those checks I listed and give us some real data and you might get a better answer than "change ur map sensor dude" .

You go buy me a voltage meter, and I will check my voltage and post up the results.
