Default A/C replacement

Ok, I took my crx to the a/c shop and they told me that my a/c compressor is dead and that I have to replace the evaporator core and the dryer. I know that I can replace the compressor and dryer easily. But the evaporator core is under the dash right? Do i really have to remove the dash to get to the core? Can't I just remove the glove box? thanks

yeah all you need to do is unscrew the 2 screws that hold the glove box on, and then unbolt the 2 metal straps holding the evaporator in. that sounds kinda fishy that you need a new dryer and evaporator.. ill bet that you only need a new compressor. but .. new stuff is always good.. just expensive.

Here's the manual.
http://www.honda.co.uk/owner/C...4.pdf

But I agree. Are you sure you need an evaporator?

Also, consider Duracool. It works better than R12.

Honda manual says if you leave the system open to long then change the dryer. As for the evaporator, it doesn't hurt to open it and charge the expansion valve (which is inside the evaporator). I opened my, just used a blew air through the veins, and change the valve. (Get the expasion valve kit from honda - also get the washers too). You'll need some black tar tape available at Napa parts.

you can generally get the whole a/c system with ALL components for less than 300 used.

I had bought used A/C system for may '90 HatchBack that didn't come with A/C. The place I bought from was found on internet search and located somewhere in CO. I paid, yes, about $300. And it did not include everthing despite of them saying there will be everything. On top of that the line leads to evaporator was broken off, instead of clean removal. I complaind and they sent me several lines. This was last summer and I have not installed the system yet, so I don't know what I really have.

Please be careful if you are thinking of buying used system from far away. I live in FL, by the way.

if the compressor is bad you shouldnt need to change all of the other AC components.

You cannot have the system open to air for a long period of time, otherwise it will collect moisture in the system that you cannot get rid of.

You should be fine with just changing the compressor as long as you dont leave the system open to the atmosphere too long.

oops i meant the expansion valve my mistake. Ok good I thought i had to take out my dashboard again, it was a pain. Well my system is converted to r134. Now for the compressor, I don't really want to buy a used one from the junkyard. Are remanufactured a/c compressors really reliable?

OEM remans yes... aftermarket is hit or miss, i have seen a bunch of cars come back with aftermarket remans that broke. Its really up to you. Just take it out, you dont need it.

believe it or not AC Delco makes remaned compressors and they are remaned back to very high standards.

I would definitely buy an AC delco reman unit and plus they have 5 year warranty.

As far as the junkyard a/c units... my a/c unit ended up having a screwed up condensor which I had to buy new...

all in all b/c my compressor was given to me my cost of installing a/c was about 300 cdn for a fully working system.

Ok, I found 2 choices Compressor from:
"Matsushita $307" or "Sanden $408" both brand new

I guess I should go for the cheaper one right? I'm not sure what compressor is the stock one thats on my crx right now. What do you guys think?

look on the frame under the hood for a sticker that tells you what compressor you have. Matsushita if I remember correctly is a slightly larger compressor whereas the sanden one is smaller.

Civics use both and I think you should match them.

Cheers
