valve guides or rings ??
my friends teg is starting to blow a little blue smoke out of the exhaust when he backs off the gas , not all the time though . My question is i cant remember when one of those are going bad which one will puff smoke when you back off the gas . Then the other does it when you first start up .
I know old v8's act this way , should be the same for our 4 cylinders .
So if it smokes a little when you back off the gas is it rings or valve guides

Do a leak down test. If the numbers are good then it's the valve guides/seals.
Worn valve guides/seals will cause the huge puff of blue smoke on cold starts. You could also take the header off and look at the valve stems. If there's oil then it's the guides or seals.
