Default Compression numbers...hot and cold...help!

Mr 95 b18c1 has these numbers:

Hot engine:
1.....210
2.....210
3.....170.
4.....210

Cold engine:
1....195
2....210
3....155...
4....200

The car doesn't seem to have any power at all. top end is almost net even there....I'm not sure if it's because of the comp nubers or other factors such a vtec not working, bad plugs and wires....(those are getting replaced tonight).....just for fun I put a bit of oil down the hole of #3....and the numbers went up to 250!....if it turns out I need new rings, are they lots of $$$$?(I'll do a search on that one while I wait for feedback on the numbers) Thanks for your time.

your hot #'s look good except for #3 i would do a leakdown and see here the problem lies. although it sounds like your rings since you put oil in and it raised that much. call a few machine shops and get qoutes for the job. do as much work as you can yourself.(i.e. disassemble the engine ) save some money with some diy

Bad Rings.... DING DING DING DING.

The rings and hone job alone aren't expensive(maybe < $500) but you probably will want to do more than that depending on the mileage.

The swap labor alone can be over $1,000 though.

is there anyway it's the valves? This engine only has 16k since the bottom was rebuilt...? Also, 15 170 bad or is it the fact that there is such a difference between #3 and the others.....what about if all were 170, would it be ok then? ah...I really didn't want to break down this engine...dammit!

You are basically driving a Civic EX and will be until you fix the rings. A 40 PSI variance is no good!

Go ahead and do some more tests but I believe if the PSI goes up after dropping in some oil, it's a pretty good indicator the problem lies with the rings.

Aren't you burning a ton of oil?

not sure, I just got the car. The guy I bought it from said it was the valves on number 3.....I guess after using the oil test....it is the rings. Now it's time to find some.
