Default 400 Guys,Help!

After tons of searching,and hours spent on the FZRArchives,I am reluctant to find the appropriate float height settings for my track bike.I just did a major carb cleanup and I want to get my floats set to the correct height so I can put it together and start tuning,but I have no idea what height is needed.Hopefully someone here has or has had an FZR 400 and know how high to set them.Thanks.

That's ok..Do you know any good links to a forum where people with all different 400's go,or a strictly race forum,or anything that might have the info I'm looking for? The damn FZR Archives can't even help me.A discussion board commited to the FZR models and no one can tell me how high to set my floats.hmmm

Right bike wrong motor LOL

Is this information in a Factory service manual? Do you have a Factory sevrice manual? You could try to phone a Yamaha Dealership and speak to a tech and possibly get an aswer. I assume that you have mikuni Carbs you could possibly call Sudco and ask one of those people. I don't want to sound to simplistic here but why can't you just set the float hieght from trial and error. Bend the tangs up and get your fuel line and run it into the bowl if it overflows then your too high, repeat until you can run gas into the bowls and not have it overflow. It is a place to start. I may be absolutely wrong here and if I am I hope that someone will correct me. However....in theory if you set it too low the valve will not let gas in fast enough to keep up with the demand on the engine and you'll run lean...No good.

Thanks,Big Pete.It does look like a great site and I'm sure they'll have the answer for me.

TOR,I must disagree with the comment about the motor.The FZR 400 motor is a proven relaible motor,with the exception of the valve train.That's only one issue that people have to contend with,unlike many other bikes that have numerous reliability issues.Considering I don't have money to throw out the window on a rebuild for my bike every other race,like most 2 strokes,this bike will be great for what it's intended..Since I have an 05 600RR,I am not deeply concerned with the power of the FZR.It's just to learn how to drag my knee on,then I will eventually have a bigger track bike.Maybe a 2'nd 600RR.Don't take this message the wrong way.I am a huge fan of the 2-stroke,as I have owned many and will not buy a ATV or dirtbike that isn't one.Thanks.

keep the FZR. Great track bike and you'll learn lots from it. If you plan to race later, most 400 classes are much better for new racers (I'm thinking of racing in AFM in a year or two if I get fast enough)

No harm...Actually my comment was more of poking fun at myself than poking fun at you. If I had an "unmolested" motorcycle I would try to help out as best I could, but as is I can't offer any real advice on your problem because I simply don't know, so instead I tried to offer some semi-useful information about Carb tuning. I wasn't trying to say "mines bett'r then yurs" Yes from what I've read about the 400 motor is that the valve seats get torn up with the RPM's. Other than that its a good motorcycle. Actually I've considered buying another FZR400 with the 400 motor precisely for track duty. We'll see...that is a long ways off.

I also aggree with bigpete, enjoy the bike use it for what it was meant for (going around a track) and Learn.

I knew a guy that had an RZ 350.I almost bought it one time but changed my mind due to other options at the time.It was one unpredictable bastard of a bike that could land a guy on his a$$ in seconds.hahaha.He blew it up a few times now cuz whoever rebuilds it for him doesn't do a very nice job and I think he's running a major lean condition..Anyway,thanks for your time fella's.Much appreciated.

Your right the 400 motor might actually be more reliable than the RZ motor. On the RZ motor If you have any air leaks at all on the intake system say goodbye to the pistons. ...EGT gauges are your friend!

I like hunting 400's, they are a similar mentality of rider to those on 250's. There are plenty of 75+ HP ones in my club, mostly covered in burnt two stroke oil
