Default Question for those that rebuilt their bottom end with eagle rods..

What honda rod bearing colors did you use? I know that the eagle rods are equivalent to #3s for GSR rods but in the manual for the itr the numbers on the rods are different. Instead of them being 1-4, they are like 21-26. Basically where do I start? The codes on the itr crank is different, but what do I match the eagle rod code with? It is #3 for the gsr and what is it for the itr? (#23???). In the manual you can actually mix and match colors between the rod bearing and main cap bearing (green/pink). Hope my question makes sense... I have never rebuilt a bottom end, so I apologize for my slowness..... BTW, I am using eagle GSR rods, which I was told were the same.

Thanks in advance...

yes, you can mix and match bearing halfshells to get the correct clearances. as far as a starting place, someone else on here will need to jump in.

Bearing #s are the same for all B-series vtecs. Just use the #s from a GS-R or B16 if you have access to them. Also, mixing colors (2 different bearing sizes) on the same journal is never a good idea...it will not allow that portion of the crank to spin concentrically and possibly lead to premature bearing failure. If you have any doubts that the bearing fir may not be accurate, you may want to measure the clearances with plastigauge or a nice mic if you have one. Hope this helps!

Just FYI, the type R and GSR rods are narrower on the big end, than all other bseries. Swapping colors to achieve correct clr is ok within reason. I woundn't mix a red and blue on the same journal. But if your close, you can swap the bearings in the caps to achieve slightly tigher or looser clr.(ex. i used grn/brn combos for my eagles in a b20.) The difference is neglegible, each color step is .0002"(thanks michael) . Definately plastiguage all clr with custom pieces.

The thinnest bearing is red, followed by pink, yellow, green, brown,

black, and blue. If you looked at the chart I provided in my last reply,

you'll see that the bearings are graduated in .0002" increments.

So if you replace a green half with a brown, you're decreasing the

clearance by .0002", if you go with two browns, the difference would be

.0004".

Now, if you're trying to beat the plastigauge ritual, forget it. You do

it until the clearances are what they need to be, or you can worry

yourself sick over the life expectancy of your engine once it's in the car.

Try going to brown bearings in the caps for the journals that are

currently green (leave the green bearings in the block.) Take a green

bearing and place it in the cap instead of the yellow. Measure the

clearance.

We like to see .0015" -.0017".

Splitting the colors is an accepted way of achieving the numbers you're

looking for.

wrong, all bearings are egg shaped to begin with, and the sides of the half shells are the same thickness. sometimes getting the correct clearance requires using different colors on the same journal. again, plastigauge is totally useless if you're looking to get dead nuts on clearance.

more good info in this thread tho.

yea, what D said.

FYI, two of my rods used GRN/GRN and the other two used GRN/YEL for the proper clearance.
