Default Z6 rev limiter at 3500

i know a guy just posted this problem up but i have a d16z6 and he had a b16 so i want to make sure that the problem isnt the same... my car was running fine on the highway but when i got off and turned onto a backroad it wouldnt rev past 3500... did that all the way down the road... i pulled over and shut off the car and when i turned it back on it revved normally... could my TPS or my dizzy be going bad? another thing to note would be that earlier today i took my car for a drive around the block and the next time i tried to start it it would turn over but it wouldnt fire... i also noticed that the fuel pump wasnt priming and i found i wire that had come loose and so i reconnected it but nothing changed... then i took off the gas cap and it started like normal... whats going on?

just got home and on the way here it did it a few times again... but it would go away for a little while when i turn the car off and start it up again... and if im in 4th and try accelerate when im below 3500 it bucks back and forth... im going to go and spray a can of intake cleaner in it later tonight because i ran around without a filter for a while and i think that some dirt might have gotten in there... do you guys think that the TPS could be malfunctioning because its dirty? thanks

Sounds like your main relay is going, quite common on older Hondas. When it wasnt reving past 3.5k, was there a CEL?

could the main relay be my problem? and yes ive been throwing a CEL since i did the swap about a month ago but i have no way of finding out what code it is b/c the guy who had the car before me swapped out the gauge cluster and did a poor wiring job... because of that whenever i go to check the codes it blinks awkwardly(such as it'll blink 18 short blinks or two long blinks and then itll have these short flashes that just barely show up) ... is there anyway to hook up a diagnostic comp. to check the codes? the car never had this problem before when i was throwing CEL's... thanks for all the help guys

if it was wired poorly something could be grounding out , check yer wires out really really good

what wire was loose? I had a similar prob with my LS hatch but it was my A1 ecu plug had slipped out out of the ecu....but mine cut out at 3k only and sometimes would make the #1 injector DUMP gas and my **** would start smoking and misfireing.

But before I found the prob sometimes it would happen and I would kill it and restart and it would be fine....wierd

It's the igniter unit in the distributor. It's extremely common and everyone describes the symptoms the same way "rev limit".

Never would i think it's the main relay... that symptom would be the injectors and fuel pump not getting 12v+. It cannot cause the car to only rev to 3500.

are you throwing any codes intermittenly? sounds like you are going into Limp Mode

well i sprayed a whole can of intake cleaner in it and nada... went out for a little drive tonight and it started doing the same **** over again... except this time when i turned the car off it wouldnt change anything... so i pull over into a parking lot and disconnected that wire that i had connected earlier and now its not running rich or showing any of the symptoms that it had been earlier today ... so of course i am happy now... it turns out that after i did the swap with the rywire harness i had a green wire that had nothing to go to(as far as i could see)... it was located near the firewall and the fuse box in that whole mess of wires... and i noticed that when my car wouldnt start that there was a green wire by the ecu that had heatshrink on the end of it but no wire and thats why i connected them together ... ryan, do you know what either of these two wires could be? i know you probably need to see it but i will try to get a pic of it up tomorrow... as for now *yawn* im tired... night guys

well nevermind... i was driving around last night and it started all over again... i turned the car off and then back on and it went away for the night... now im thinking that i need to spray more intake cleaner in the TB... what do you guys think? is there anywhere that i can buy a TPS? i work at advance auto parts and we dont carry them... should i just go to a junkyard and get one? what do they look like and how much do they cost... thanks

Finally i have to pictures of the wires that i was talking about... here you guys go:

the green wire by the ecu(it was included in the same harness as the wires for the MPFI)


and the green wire that was near the underhood fuse box... please excuse the wiring mess... lol... this one was inside of the main wire clump
